Fibroadenoma turned out to be cancer?

Just had a biopsy which was really painful as I have breast implants and they struggled to get it. They were confident it’s just a fibroadenoma but I’m still stressing. Has anyone been told it’s just a fibroadenoma and it turned out to be malignant?

  • Hi, hope you don't mind me asking? I am 10 days after surgery for removal of my  fibroadenoma, which was just over 7cm and attached to the chest wall, which has worried me. when did your scar heal? mine is not bleeding but still a bit open and sore I still have the tape attached but had a little look. Also when did you get your results? How long did they take?

    than you x

  • Hello :)

Not at all! Aww I hope it went okay for you! I am now about 2 months post surgery and my scar still hurts me a little bit somethings and is still quite red and angry. I had to wear a support bra in bed until about a week ago because it hurt too much not to wear one.
I think it took about 2-3 weeks for it to become a scar rather than a wound if that makes sense?
It took 2 weeks for me to get my results back (I got them over the phone) and the consultant literally only took 2 mins talking to me ‍♀️
let me know if you've got any other questions :) x

  • Thank you so much getting back to me, just been to the nurse she's redesssed it and it actually looks better than I thought she told me to keep the cover on for another 5 days so think  it's more peace of mind

  • Hi everyone.

I found this thread after searching on here for a bit of reassurance.

I found a lump in my right breast, went to the gp who referred me to the breast clinic. My gp said it was a cyst, consultant at the hospital said cyst, had an ultrasound and was then told they were pretty certain it was a fibroadenoma. Had a fine needle biopsy and was told to expect my results in writing.

I then received a phone call 2 weeks later saying my results were back and they need me to go in for further testing. Received my letter with my appointment for Thursday this week..for a mammogram, another ultrasound of my right breast and ultrasound of my right axilla. I'm started to get myself a little worked up,wondering why I need further tests when they were so certain it was a fibroadenoma. I guess they're just doing a thorough job to rule anything out, which I'm grateful for,but the being in limbo is the worst thing ever!!!!

Any advice is truly appreciated  xx

  • Hi Everyone,

Probably all wondering why a guy is typing on this page, but I am seeking some advice for my daughter. I am a single dad of three girls and my middle daughter (Lilley, aged 16) noticed a lump in her breast last month, so due to family history of the "C" I took her to the GP, a quick referral to the hospital and the consultant said it maybe a fibroadenoma or a cyst.

After an ultrasound they advised an immediate biopsy which was done. The mass is approx 4cm in size yet she had no lump in October. The consultant is concerned at the rate of growth as it's just getting bigger. The biopsy result showed it is Benign, but the consultant said on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being the worst caner, Lilley is a 2, 1 means no cancer at all.

Im so confused, it's benign, but hes put her on a scale for cancer? They are refferring her to another hospital in Cambridge for the mass to be removed. My daughter is coping really well but I'm in pieces as I dont know what to do or say to her.

It's difficult for a dad to talk to his 16 year old about anything, let alone this.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank You.

    Simon.

  • Hi Dadof3

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter. Unfortunately I only discovered the lump a couple of days ago and I have been referred to the breast clinic which they say will be a few weeks wait so I'm not very knowledgeable on any of this to tell you the truth. Hopefully another person on the forum will be able to have some answers for you.

  • Hi Dadof3

I think it's amazing how your daughter is able to confide in you to tell you about these things in the first place and the fact you are trying to do all your research, shows what a good Dad you are!

Firstly I think in young girls it's a juvenile fibroadenoma, some of them can grow quite large. The fact that the biopsy showed it to be benign is a good thing, they probably just want to remove it incase it continues to grow and it will probably be tested once it's out, just to make sure they made the right diagnosis.

I know it's so worrying, but try to focus on the positives,be there for her and just let her know if she wants to talk, you will be there.

Good luck and let us know how she goes on!

  • Hi Belle,

just wondering how you got on? I too am in the same boat, had my first hospital appointment 4 days ago where they told me they were confident it is a fibrodemena and was told I would be given biopsy results over the phone either today or on Monday. I've now received a letter with another hospital appointment for next week so I'm absolutely worried sick, especially after finding this thread and seeing how some ladies have sadly been misdiagnosed at first as a fibrodemena that is actually cancer.

Especially during the current situation with Covid/lockdown you would expect phone call results rather than having to go into the hospital for a face to face appointment if there's nothing to worry about.

So I'm very scared and hoping someone can give me some reassurance that their follow up face to face appointment was a confirmation of a fibrodemena and nothing to worry about. I'm 30 years old and have a small smooth lump that moves around and doctors were confident it's a fibrodemena. I had a fibrodemena diagnosed 5 years ago at the same hospital and didn't have any follow up appointments or phone calls, they simply told me there and then that it was a fibrodemena xx

  • Hi

i know this was over a year ago now but unfortunately at the age of 36 my suspected fibroid adinoma was cancerous. I too was shocked, as the sonographer had reassured me it was very unlikely to be cancerous. They called it a mouse as it moved.  However due to family history I did eventually find out I have the BRCA 2 gene.

I really hope yours was benign but if anyone else reads this it is very very rare to not be benign so please try not to panic x

  • Hi everyone,

I found a lump few weeks ago so phoned my doctor and they gave me an urgent referral at the breast clinic. I had an ultrasound scan which showed the lump I found was a cyst but on doing the scan they found another lump which I hadn't noticed, and also a swollen lymph node. They said the lump is a fibroadenoma and benign but they did a biopsy and they aspirated the lymph node. I went home feeling relieved everything was fine but now I've been googling about aspirating lymph nodes and it's got me worried that the other lump might not be fibroadenoma.  I have been told I will get a phone call next Wednesday with my results so fingers crossed everything is ok. I am 28 with no family history of breast cancer but I am a natural worrier! x
