Lump in neck

Hello

I’ve had a lump in the left side of my neck for nearly 7 weeks this was after I had tonsillitis, but the lump has remained. My doctor sent me to ent specialist. He said that there is a lump inside my neck also as the one that’s visible on my neck. That was on the Thursday the following week I had an ultra sound and the performed a FNA I am still waiting for the results as it’s only been a week. I have an MRI scan booked head with contrast. Then on Tuesday the consultant had me booked in for a biopsy on my tonsil and another procedure of which I forgot what it was called. This is moving at a fast pace and this has me worried. If it turns out to be cancer can they just cut it out or will I need chemo etc. Hopefully it’s not but I just need to get some perspective on what to expect if it turns out to be the C word. I just thought that the doctor might just cut it out, why would I need two biopsies

update to the above

23/4/19

i was told that the fna show metasised carcinoma in the saliva gland area and this is the second site. I had a biopsy of the left tonsil and he also done a panesophy to which I will get the results on Wednesday. He was surprised that I hadn’t had chest mri done but that’s been ordered now. From what he said my options maybe surgery and radiotherapy or radiotherapy and chemo. I assume the latter would be the most extreme. So fingers crossed it’s a whip out and radiotherapy. Unsure on timescales for the treatment but no doubt I’ll get this all next week. Thanks to everyone who has replied or commented. Been nice to read in a weird way.

  • Hi Chris

we have just had similar but in the larynx . My husband lost his voice completely we had everything that you have had thus far. During biopsy were they removed as much of the lesion that they could he was diagnosed with very early larynx cancer . Although he had it cut out he has still got 33 rounds of radiotherapy just to make sure all the surrounding cells are cleared of the cancer . His cancer was caught early T1 but still need the radiotherapy just to make sure . He was offered lazer but as there was a possibility of him losing his voice he chose radio. He was moved swiftly along just as you are .  Fingers crossed with you but it all sounds like you are heading along the normal procedure route . Pps I’m not a doctor but I think if it’s just in the tonsil and turns out to be cancer (it may well not be ) you will be offered what we were . If it’s gone into in to a nearby lymph then you will I believe be given 1 or 2 chemo rounds alongside radiotherapy. But please don’t take this as gospel & they will remove as much as they can during biopsy . Keep in touch x

  • Sorry to hear your news, but thanks for your reply it’s reassuring, I will know more on Tuesday just hope it’s good news, I will post update after speaking with consultant.

  • I hope for good news for you Chris . X  My husband is halfway through treatment & we are very positive and remain upbeat . X

  • Hi Chrisirhc.

Your Drs seem to be on the ball with tests. It is truly a horrible time tests and waiting for results.

You wrote 2x biopsies. If you mean the FNA that is a test on a lymph node or lump. The tonsil biopsy is the definitive test for C. The result of that is normally around 2weeks.Was the other test a laryngoscopy? If so that is to look further into throat area while you are under anaesthetic.

If it is C of the tonsil,it is a very treatable one with excellent outcome results. It is decided by a team of drs what  treatment will be offered. Either surgery/radiotherapy or surgery/radiotherapy/chemo or radiotherapy/chemo.

It is very natural to be worried at this time but, try to take a step at a time.Give yourself a chance to absorb info when given it at each stage. And please stay off google its so full of dire stuff. Plenty helpful kind folks on here to give you any advice and support.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. Be thinking of you xx

  • Hi

thank you for your response that’s great. In all honesty I just can’t wait until Tuesday. With the FNA will that show if there is c in the lymnode. I’ve not had the laryangoscophy year that’s getting done at the same time. I suppose the head scan will show any abnormalities. Fingers crossed hope it’s good news. I’ll update once I get all the results back.

    Thansk xx

  • Hi Crisirhc

I will answer to the best I can,we are not medics but folks who have been through the cancer mill.

The FNA can show abnormal cells, but also can be inconclusive as its such a small sample. A diagnosis can only be made following a positive biopsy. IE: tonsil or other.

This is why we say "its not cancer till they say it is". That is a positive thought to hang onto :-)

I can give you one example from experience,my husband had both tonsils removed after a FNA but before any scans. His ENT consultant was adament it was in the tonsil,it wasnt. He then passed him to maxface. Further tests scans etc revealed it to be in major salivery gland in his case.

In my case the CT scans with contrast dyes were inconclusive and I had to have another type of test. So its quite a journey of tests till you get answers.

Lets hope you will get the best news, remember stay positive and dont jump ahead of your results.

    Keep in touch xx
