Recently diagnosed with breast cancer

Howdy,

I recently had a mammogram and ultrasound scan after discovering a lump. Initially the Consultant thought that it might be a cyst, but the scans showed that it was "highly suspicious", likely to be cancer and a biopsy was performed. 

A week later I was told that it was indeed cancer. It is ER+ and HER2+, about 3.3cm in size.

I've had an MRI scan and a sentinel lymph node biopsy. I'm currently waiting for the results which should take about 4 weeks.

The Consultant spoke about chemotherapy,  followed by surgery and finally radiotherapy, spread over a year or more.

I haven't told family yet because I want to wait until I get the results, so that I know exactly what I'm facing.

People keep telling me that I'll need support and to talk, but I just feel numb.

    Hi Sam, 

    im sorry about your diagnosis. Your still digesting all the information, there is so much to take in isn't there? Your mind will be in a whirlwind...mine was...

     

    but im here to tell you that's it's all doable...I too was her2 pos and am currently halfway through chemo...I had surgery first...

     

    The only way I coped was taking things a day at a time, I didn't look too far ahead...I still don't as iv still quite a way to go yet.... The NHS will look after you, just trust in them and hand yourself over...which at first I found difficult as I'm a complete control freak, but you will get there. This forum has been my God send, there are loads of us breast ladies on here...

    Hello, 

    I've sent you a friend request as I'm in the same boat, just a week behind. 

    Stage two grade three, chemo to shrink the lump of 3cm then surgery.

    I was told about 8 months for it all if it all goes well.

    Awaiting my MRI scan at the moment, but expecting to start chemo in about a month or so.

    I had my first appointment with Clinical Oncology today. The sentinel lymph node biopsy was clear and the MRI scan shows a single tumour, so excellent news. 

    I start EC chemotherapy next week for 2 months and then EC with Herceptin for 6 months. Then surgery and radiotherapy. I'll be on Herceptin for a year after that. 

    Due to the position of the tumour (close to the cleavage) a mastectomy is more likely than a lumpectomy. In the grand scheme of things this is the least of my worries. 

    So I'm crossing my fingers and trying to be positive about it all

    Good news for you mri and biopsy, I've my appointment May 20th.

    Is oncology the chemo team? That'll be my next appointment after mri.

    Fingers crossed for you on 20th May. Hopefully you will receive some good news.

    Yes, Clinical Oncology are the chemotherapy team. Today was just a chat about what the treatment is going to be.
