Radiotherapy to throat

Hello everyone, my name is Ann, I am 48 and have recently been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma with occult primary. The cancer has spread to my lymph nodes in my neck and I am starting 6 weeks of radiotherapy and 2 courses of chemo in 2 wks. Yes it was a shock but now the worst thing for me is 5hinking of the side effects of treatment to my neck and throat. Iv heard they are pretty grim, ulcers in mouth throat, unable to swallow, taste and eventually a feeding tube for some time. I am looking for any particular sprays, or anything that helped anyone else in my position. Thankyou very much in advance.... Still shocked about the diagnosis but need to start thinking practically.

  • Hi ann1970

Am sorry to hear you have joined our club but there is plenty of help and support here

I was diagnosed with tonsil cancer July last year and finished treatment last Nov.
Am still in recovery and yes, the side effects can be a challenge but we are all different and recovery period and degree of side effects differ from person to person.
Feeding tube will depend as not all get. I ddint have one fitted but orthers have.
Some sied effects are pretty much constant for us all but I have kept a blog from the get go, warts and all  and I have posted link for you below so you can have a look at.
This should give you some kind of awareness on what you can potentially expect and there is also a section on helpful tips picked up along the way. I also started a thread on here at start and its nder Living with Cancer and titled Radiotherpay for Throat cancer. Lots of contributions and support from many there as well so please feel free to join in and post.
While diagnosis is a shock and the side effects can be a challenge, this type of cancer has a high success rate of cure and the light at the end of the tunnel does actually exist.

Please let me know if I can help in any way at all

  • Hello Ann. My husband is 8 days into his radiotherapy treatment for cancer of the Larynx 5 days a week for 33 sessions. We are also aware of the side effects and yes I believe things will be grim for a while . As yet he only has a sore skin around his neck & a bit of acid reflux. On his 3rd visit he was given a huge bags of creams , gaviscon , mouth washes & pain killers. The lovely NHS really do look after you.  please keep in touch for hints and tips as we will be on this journey together. These cancers have a really good prognosis so let’s kick it. X

  • Lovely blog Anchor ... these blogs are such a help. X

  • Hi Ian thankyou so much, your blog is exactly what I was looking for. Good luck and best regards for the future.

Again, like any others, please feel free to contact me and let me know if I can help in any way at all.

Best wishes with hubbys treatment and recovery and it's good you have a positive attitude towards. I believe that helps a lot and remember when some of the side effects are challenging, just think of the light at the end of the tunnel.

  • Hi Hazel, all I can say is WOW!! and I haven't even read your blog yet. I had a wee scan through it and can't believe you kept such a detailed journal. So inspirational. I start my 30 radio and 2 chemo on 23rd April so I will read a little each week, im sure that will keep me occupied during those long hours after treatment. Thankyou so much and hope your journey continues to be positive. I will definately be back in touch to compare notes.
