Advice wanted - granddad just diagnosed with throat cancer

Hi there,

My grandad (more like my dad) has just been diagnosed with throat cancer. Our 2nd diagnosis in 2 years after battling with lung cancer. He got the all clear from it and regular check ups showed clear everytime. Just as we thought things were getting better we got told he had throat cancer and had to go under the knife once again asap. We got given his operation date for 5 days after the diagnosis and was told he would have to start radiotherapy a week after. Throat cancer sounds so scary and I'm at a loss of what to do for the best. He's battled so much these last 5 years with lung cancer and an bad aortic aneurysm and I'm worried about how long or what else he could possibly have to deal with. Any advice, guidance or experiences would be great if possible as I'm unsure what to expect this time round. He only needed an op last time so I'm feeling it's bad if he's needing radio as well. Thankyou all in advance x

  • Hi Littleun.

Oh dear you and grandad have had so much to go through already, I really feel for you.

There is a few folks on here that have been through throat cancer treatments,Im sure they will come along with some kindly advice for you.

In the meantime, its a very positive thing that grandad is getting prompt treatment. It wont feel like it but its probably a good thing he didnt have radiotherapy first time round,it means he can have it this time.

It is a tough regime of treatment it wont be easy, but, grandad sounds like a fighter.

There is a couple of blogs about the journey of their treatment well worth a read to get a good idea of what to expect, [@Anchor1707]‍ and [@RadioactiveRaz]‍ are the posters. Great people! Lots of support on here.

The treatment plan to use radiotherapy is unlikely to be because the cancer is bad or advanced but more because of where it is, it is the recommended treatment surgery + RT for oropharnix/throat cancers.

Try to take some measure of comfort that his cancer is treatable, its a wee bit of light in a dark place.

Take care of you both and very best wishes xx

  • Thank you do much for your reply, I really appreciate it. Trying to prepare us both but with the super fast treatment plan it's not left much time to research and get information etc and let it all sink in. I will check out the posters information you advised. Once again Thankyou very much xx

  • Hi Littleun

    You are most welcome.

I did think the radiotherapy is scheduled very close. I am assuming the surgery is minor perhaps as there is normally a healing time inbetween. Is it possible they are only doing a biopsy or perhaps a visual look under anaesthetic. Have his consultant/oncologist given you information as to exactly where it is and what they are going to do?

Its all happening so quick you must be bewildered.

    Kind regards xx

  • Hi, it is so close it's scary! When we saw the consultant he didn't mention anything about radio at first but said he would have to have some after the op. His letter arrived the morning after we got operation date. When i rung to question it they stated it was in his notes to start it asap which made me panic more. All he said was that it's definetly cancer and it's in the right hand side of his throat. He was quite vague I'm thinking now he hasn't really given us the full picture I'm not sure but I'll definetly be questioning it. Especially as he has many health issues including a weak heart. I was so shocked when he told us I never thought really to ask or question it just thought he knows best kinda thing x

  • Hi Littleun

When my husband had his first bout with cancer, the cancer centre sent out his treatment plan within days.I contacted them and said this cant be right he is still stitched and stapled,he needs healing time. So they rescheduled his treatment. Its like nobody realised he had just gone through major surgery so recently.

If you have questions and doubts that need answers phone your surgeons secretary. Just explain that you need some things answered. Did you get a list of staff ie: clinical specialist nurse you could give them a call too.

To just say right side of throat,no wonder you dont have a clue as to whats happening.

I do hope you get some satisfactory answers and asap.

    kind regards xx

  • I'll definetly be asking some questions and making some calls. I think I'll ring and explain about time for healing and See what they say as it can't be right surely. Hopefully I'll get some answers along the way. Thankyou so much xx

  • Hi Littlup,

Am sorry to hear of your grandads diagnosis and can understand your agnst.
You also need to find out a little more details of the cancer diagnosis and treatment plan.
I would clarify treatment starting a week after operation as if tonsil taken out then there is recovery time for that.
I assume that your grandad/yourself/family would be having a meeting with consultant and support team and not just passed general information over the phone.Certainly not for something like this.

As clara mentioned I have written a blog, warts and all on my journey and I will list the link beloiw so you can have a read. I was diagnosed last June and am in recovery phase.
I'm not going to sugar coat as its  challenging but one thing to focus on is that this type of cancer has the highest success rates of cure. The light at the tunnel does exist and something to hang on to.
You should be able to get some indication from my blog of what to expect and when. We are all different in terms of recovery etc but the side effects are pretty much there for all going through.
There is also a handy section on tips picked up along the way.
I also started a thread here and lost of lovely people in same situation have contributed and we have supported and helped each other over quite a period of time. Please feel free t ojoin us and keep us posted on grandads progress and also chip in with anything you like.
Its here under Living with Cancer and titled Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer ( Anchor1707)

The treatment itself is not too bad actually and you get through it. Radiotherpy is about 10 mins each day. Its really the recovery part thats the challenging times but some recovery quicker than others.
Have a look at my blog, come back and ask any questions and please let me know if I can help in anyway at all.
Happy if you wanted to friend request to chat more easily on a one to one basis

Remember the light at the end of the tunnel.

    kind regards
