Absolutely petrified

My partner has been diagnosed with dysplasia on the floor of mouth after a biopsy of a white area. He is a non smoker or drinker. I have read in many articles that he has a very high risk of it developing into cancer due to the location and the fact he is a non drinker/smoker. I am beside myself with worry I can’t stop crying please any advice

  • Hi Worried

Perhaps you can go and see your GP to help you to cope. You are posting quite a bit and are obviously very upset and stressed. I’m not sure the right thing for you right now is to be on here and posting as you are. You say your partner is now under monitoring and will go back in a few months to see if there are any further changes. He hasn’t been diagnosed with cancer but I appreciate that you’re scared. I think all anyone can really say is...if your partner is concerned about this monitoring period then he or she should speak with their medical team again.

I am sure there are other things you can do to cope with this uncertainty in the meantime.

Could you visit your GP to see if they can suggest anything?

  • hi i am sorry to have been being a bother with my posts. I am just very scared due to what I have read in the fact that due to the location floor of mouth and him not smoking or drinking that it is very highly likely to become malignant at some point . I am sorry again

  • Nothing to be sorry about....all this horrible stress is not going to be good for you. How do you feel about visiting your doctor for a chat? He or she may be able to suggest something to help.

Your partner’s medical team are obviously happy for your partner to just be watched because they’re confident he doesn’t have cancer. So...in the meantime, whilst you’re waiting for a follow up, could you take some action to help yourself...? It will be a long period for you to go on feeling like this if you don’t....this sort of panic on this scale can’t be good for such a prolonged period x

  • I am going to speak to his consultant this week. It’s just after everything I’ve read it seems  definite conclusion that it will progress to cancer due to where it is even though he has moderate dysplasia at present. It’s feels like it is just a waiting game till in progresses to cancer

  • First of all you are not any bother at all with your posts and you should not apologise on how you feel.

We are here to help where we can and also listen .

I am not medically qualified but the fact he is a non smoker or drinker would always be a plus point from a medical point of view.
I would also advise to stay off google and searching as there is so much mis information on the internet and can easily set your mind racing. If you think about it smokers are a higher risk factor for many ailments as are drinkers as just 2 examples.
The fact that he has not been diagnosed with cancer is a good sign and perhaps it might be an idea to speak with your GP to see if there is any periodic monitoring that may help ease your worry.

I'm sorry you are upset and suggest booking an appointment with your GP to talk things through in the first instance rather than google.

a quick edit as I posted this before your last reply and see you are also going to speak to his consultant this week. Thats good and I hope he/she is able to give you some re assurance and proper medical information based on his expertise rather than google. Good luck and best wishes.

Please feel free at anytime to come back and post about anything as I re iterate you are not bothering anyone my friend.

    kind regards

    Ian

  • thanks very much Ian. I was very surprised to read that non smokers are at higher risk for dysplasia for the floor of mouth. I also read the say if a oral lesion is seen in a a smoker be worried if it’s seen in a non smoker be very worried.

  • Hi

Can I begin by saying Ian has given you sound advice. Please take it on board. There are many amazing people on this site caring, kind and with the knowledge of experience and will welcome you to come here anytime.

You do seem to be reading up on all the very negative stuff that is out there"if seen in a non smoker be very worried". Its a bit like fake news grabbing headlines. Try to stay away from this stuff honestly its just stressing you out. Which isnt doing you or your partner any good.

A wee bit of advice if I may. Get a good dentist he will see him on a more regular basis usually 6mthly. I have a young dentist who is very up to date on training etc and is very on the ball with diagnosis. Quite often a gp will tell a patient to go see his/her dentist as these people are most knowledgable on everything oral.

    Kindest regards. x

  • hi thanks Clara for your comments. All the info I’ve read is from oral cancer pages. From what I’ve read my partner has his dysplasia in the worst place possible for it turning malignant and him being a non smoker with a lesion at this site makes him higher risk again of malignancy . I’m sure I read on this site under oral cancer that the statistics show only 17 percent of oral cancers are due to smoking which backs up the other sites. I’m so petrified of him getting cancer and losing him he’s my world

  • Hi Worried

Glad you are seeing the consultant. They’re best placed to give you the answers you need. They’ll hopefully be able to put your mind at rest and explain their rationale around the waiting period. Tell them about your findings and see what they have to say. But....I agree with the others....please stay away from google. In an anxious state, you will likely only seek out information to support your partner getting cancer (which he doesn’t have) and will disregard anything else. Will you let us know what the consultant has to say? x

  • hi hopefully speaking to consultant this week. I was alarmed to read on the science direct website that if you have dysplasia on floor of mouth in a non smoker you have a 45% higher risk Of it becoming cancer I have read this eleaewhere too . I noticed in my partner s mouth just along on his sublingual fold from the biopsy site an ulcer or white spot with a red inflamed bit beside it I’m worried that’s it progressed to cancer already . It’s onlu been nearly 4 weeks since biopsy also the site has still not completely healed still white rim around it.
