My mum has cancer.

I have just been told that my mum has cancer... and that the doctors believe there is an 85% chance that I will develop breast cancer before I am 20.

My mum is having surgery in the next two weeks to reduce the cancer, and after that will probably need a few rounds of chemo to make sure it is gone.

She is only 36, I'm only 15, and I don't know what to say or think or do...

  • Oh bless you, what a horrible thing to go through . Have the doctors discussed testing you for the hereditary gene?  Research has come a long way and breast cancer isn't necessarily a death sentence ( as many ladies on here will testify to)

Do you think you would like to talk to the Macmillan nurses? Your feelings will be all over the place, do you feel able to talk to your mum?

You will find support on here so keep popping back....

    take care love xx

  • My mum and I have always been close, and I'm kicking myself for not realising something was wrong earlier- especially when she'd dissapear to answer phone calls, or starting taking long periods of time of work. I think I could talk to her, I just don't know what to say... my mum's doctor wants me to be tested, but I've only just turned fifteen and can't have a mammogram until I'm sixteen.

I have a close, tight knit, small group of friends that were the first people I turned to, but I can't help but feel like they don't know what to do... I can't even say that know what to do.

And I'm not the most expressive perosn when it comes to anything really, and would have no clue on how to contact the Macmillan nurses, or even what to say to them.

Thank you for your help x

  • hi, I understand you’re worried and scared, my daughter is 13, she is too, they will want to test you if your mum has the genes which is linked to breast and ovarian cancer, and hereditary to be on the safe side to make sure you don’t have it too. I am just 29, and got diagnosed a few weeks ago with breast cancer, they are also testing me to see if I have the gene, if I do, my family too will have to be tested as a precautionary as well so they can help prevent what is happening to me to them. Im sending big hugs to you all xx

  • times may be tough at the moment, but things have come along way since years ago, and the doctors have told me it’s treatable. Try not to think the worst xx

  • Hi, This is the Macmillan number.....0808 808 00 00

I am glad Ellie has also replied to you, it sounds like they are in the same position as you and your mum...like Ellie says, cancer is a whole different ball game these days....with good results.
