Advice- lymph node as secondary cancer

Hi there

please can anyone provide any advice?

My husband got told last week that he had some secondary cancer cells in his lymph node in his neck. Primary is unknown but they thought in the nasal area.

PET CT scan this week has shown no obvious signs of primary (clinician nurse delivered this message pending consultation on Monday next week).

My husband is having a MRI tomorrow on his neck to see if this shows anything.

Wondering if anyone has any advice or similar experience please?

Many thanks in advance.

    Hi Charn,

I am so sorry to hear about your husband's symptoms. Unfortunately, not all primaries are easy to trace.

His care team seem to have expected to find it in his nasal area, hence the PET scan. It sounds as if this still hasn't shown where his primary is and, this is why they are giving him an MRI tomorrow. This is the gold standard test and, usually shows up clearer images, so I presume that this is why they are going to carry out this procedure.

It is always very worrying when you are waiting for an accurate diagnosis, but there is no point in deciding upon treatment until this happens.

I sincerely hope that the MRI can locate his primary and, that he can move on to treatment.

Please keep us updated and remember, that we are always here for you both.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hello,

l was diagnosed with secondary cancer in the right lymph node, primary was tonsil,in april2018,l also had extracapsuler spread in the node.

l had 7 weeks radiotherapy,2 chemotherapy, the treatment so far was successful l am also HPV16+.

l am a non smoker/non drinker, the cancer completely took me by surprise,no symptoms only the neck lump, beware when you start treatment the lump on your neck may get bigger due to infection or just reacting to the treatment, but don’t worry my lump did not go completely till week 7 of treatment,

my advice  The treatment is never ending, so take one day at a time and you must finish radiotherapy this is the crucial part of the treatment, not the chemo.

hope this gives you a insight into what is ahead
