Small cell lung cancer query

Hi all x we have recently found out that hubby (49) has small cell lung cancer which has spread to a lymph node near the heart so surgeons cant operate so he starts chemo next week - just wondering if anyone has any similar experience, advice, and idea of life expectancy with this - we are going to apply for pip and things but he s worked since he left school so we re dreading going through all the benefits stuff x

  • Hi there, just today we found out my mom (70) has lesions on her lung, liver and the lymph node in her chest. She will be having further tests over the next few days for further info. Will surgery be ruled out fir the lymph nodes in the chest? They have mentioned radiotherapy. Hope everything works out for you and hubby x

  • Hi Cazza

    So sorry to read this.

Just wanted to say....a friend of mine called Macmillan and they were a huge help when sorting out benefits. I wonder if you could contact them for a chat...or you may have access to a Macmillan rep already....they may well be able to get the ball rolling for you and take the sting out of the process too.

I’ve just found their benefits page....there is a lot of info on there and so some may find it a bit overwhelming....but you could always just give them a call (0808 808 0000) if you didn’t fancy reading through everything xx

I’m unsure as to whether Cancer Research UK (this site) offer any specific advice in relation to benefits...but no harm in asking if you have a spare moment to give them a call too xx

    Hi Cazza,

I am so sorry to hear about your husband's diagnosis and to learn that it's inoperable. You may find a Macmillan advice centre in his hospital. Your local Citizen's Advice Bureau will also help you out. The PIP form is a bruiser - 50 plus pages long, but you really need someone with experience of filling them in to do it for you. He might also be entitled to carer's allowance. Don't delay in applying for these as they take a long time to come through, even if you are accepted.

Most people are desperate to know about life expectancy. It is impossible for anyone to predict this, as we all react differently. The best person to ask is his consultant, as he will have seen your husband and have all of his medical notes to hand. This leaves him in a much better position to tell you than anyone else.

I sincerely hope that his chemo helps to improve things for him.

Please let us know how he gets on. We are always here for you both.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Cazza

i hope your hubby is receiving treatment. You can get help from Macmillan and if you need help with care Marie Curie nurses are  brilliant.

If you have a Maggies centre near you, they can help with benefits etc.

    wishing you all the best.

  • Hi cazza,

I was diagnosed almost 6 months ago with sclc, I also have it in my lymph nodes in my right neck and chest, also have cancer in my spine and left hip,I've had 4 chemo's and they had to stop as I got sepcis that nearly killed me,I'm so angry with my body as I only had 2 more to go,but the 4 chemo shrunk down to 50%, and Oncologist seemed happy with that, she said the ones on my spine and hip are small,I'm awaiting radiotherapy on my brain now as a precaution that the cancer doesn't travel there,I also have to start next Friday on zometa,it's a bone protector so the cancer won't spread,my nerves are truly gone,I don't even know who I am since diagnosed,
