spine metastasis diagnosed

My mother is 86 years old in the UK.   From the MRI scan done last week on 20th December 2018 she was diagonised with metatastic cancer of the spine in 5 places . The primary is located in her top right lung and a small growth was found in her left bottom lung. Her stomach, liver, kidneys and gall bladder are free from cancer.
I am desperate for help as its painful to see her stuggling to see her suffering, she has intense pain on her right hand side of the stomach  as well as her back in the same line. She is feeling nausic   and have lost a lot of weight. On the 31st December 2018 she is going to have radiotherapy as she is too old and frail for chemotherapy . I am not that educated so i rely on hospital expert advise and have been told that it would shrink the cancer and hence take the pain away.
Does anyone know about  hyperthermia treatments. Whether and what alkaline drinks /foods to give as i understand acidic foods are not good with regards to cancer cells.
This Christmas and the New Year was not a good one for the family.

Thank you
Look forward to hear from someone.

  • Hi there Neilash,

So sorry to hear about your mum's suffering, it must be awful for her, and for you to see it too.

I don't know anything about hyperthermia treatments but I have attached here a link to an American government page on Hyperthermia and cancer treatment https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/treatment/types/surgery/hyperthermia-fact-sheet

Here is a link to the Cancer Research page on alternative therapies  https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/cancer-in-general/treatment/complementary-alternative-therapies   I include that because it sounds like you are looking at different therapies you could maybe try.  There are some good complementary therapies for symptom management but there are no cures available in the alternative therapy market, no matter how much some people try and make money from our desperation with their outrageous claims.  Every single alternative therapy cancer cure claim has been thoroughly debunked so please don't go down the line of putting your hope (and money) in any of them trying to get your mum cured.

I feel it's important to ask, if your mum was to try hyperthermia and/or alternative therapies what would be the goal?  Is your mum looking to prolong her life or hoping to be cured?  There is a difference between symptom management and alternative therapy to try and slow or cure cancer.  As your mum is suffering prolonging her life with alternative therapies could lead to longer suffering, whereas using alternative therapies purely for symptom management could possibly relieve some suffering without prolonging the suffering she does have.

The whole alkaline diet thing is also, sadly, nonsense.  It is true that cancer cells can’t live in an overly alkaline environment, but neither can any of the other cells in your body.  Your kidneys regulate the pH of your blood (usually slightly alkaline) and they regulate it within a very narrow but healthy range.  No matter what you eat your kidney will work to keep your blood pH within the healthy range (for your own good) and any excess acid or alkili comes out in your urine.

Your mum can ask her oncologist for advice on alternative therapies, diet etc.  they are usually very happy to give advice on anything the patient can do themselves to help and they are usually well-versed in what therapies can actually help manage symptoms.  Contrary to what the conspiracy theorists claim there is not big professional attempt to keep a 'natural' cancer cure from us.  After all, the big pharmaceuticals would make money from said cure just as they have all the other treatments derived from nature (penicillin, opioids,... basically every drug that has ever existed came from nature and was then synthesised in a lab to make it usable).

So do ask your mum's oncologist what she can do, but do think seriously about what your goal is.  As a cancer sufferer I would consider easing your mum's suffering to be the goal of complementary therapy, but maybe your mum is looking to prolong her life no matter the suffering?

    Best wishes,

    LJx

  • Hello LJx,

I thank you for taking the trouble to write a very long to the point reply. You can see the desperation in me, suffering to see her go downhill in less than a month. She just has no appetite and  hence no strenght to even stand. You are correct in pointing out , that I should be looking at pain management and quality of life. Rather than prologing her life and suffer even more.  I am sure if these alternative therapies were reliable and an answer to  cure , we would in the UK have  offered it to all cancer sufferers.

    Thank you once again.

    Kind Regards

    Neilash

  • Thanks Neilash,

Do talk to your mum's oncologist, they do put importance in symptom management and easing people's suffering so they will be keen to help.  They should be able to do something.

Will be thinking of you and your mum, it must just be awful.

    Best wishes,

    LJx
