Lung Biopsy - Why would this be?

My dad had a CT scan which they were sure was cancer and went for a PET scan last week. His follow up is next Weds and now have called today and said he needs a lung biopsy on Thursday.

What would they be doing in the biopsy? Checking what it is? I am really worrying now - does this mean its worse news than we initially thought (they were talking about surgery to remove it and then treatment)

Thanks all

  • Thank you for your kind wishes.  You are right, it does get exhausting and I often find a 'quiet place' on my own and mutter the words "I am finding this so hard, how am I going to cope if it gets worse". Then you soldier on and tomorrow is another day and hopefully a good one. Today is a good day because after 13 weeks we thankfully got our 'blue badge' so all these hospital appointments can be free parking and less walking for him.

Best wishes to you and I will keep in touch when I have news. xx

  • All the best for the CT scan news. Do you have a date for the op? My mum and dads neighbour had her first hip done (shes in her 70's) and due to have the other (or has done) and was literally up walking about in no time! My mum said she was walking 5 miles after no time. Hopefully all goes well for your husband but I can imagine its a worry.

Its' lovely to hear from you both and do keep in touch xx

  • Hi my partner ended up with a lung biopsy as lots of people have little growths and things that are not cancerous pet scans detect cancer i believe down to two millimetres but infamation can give false readings the only way i i beleive is put a needle through your lung wall and take the tiniest bit of tissue then the do real tests i suppose all the othere tests do a job but its like trying to read a newspaper behind a net curtain you can see the writing but you just are  not a hundred percent on all of it . After its done they leave a tube in for however long it takes to heal and once the bubbles stop they take it out they just pull it out not painful but a bit uncomfortable and any fluids drain out . It may be nothing the test will tell for sure .. in my case with liz they messed about for 8 months thinking it was something else and it all took to long then it was to late i have never seen such shower of incompetant rotters and they had allready said it definatly wasnt cancer that made worse rant over not easy but looks like your poor dads in better hands you usualy find out pretty quick yay or nay so just try not to worry we are all rooting for your dad as we have all been touched by this horrid disease one way or anothere .some are absolute saints in my eyes the ones that have it. You can spk to cancer nurse over the phone theres a number to ring its at the begining or you can ring the marie curie helpline and mcmillan they will advise you its free and they are very knowledgeable

  • CT scan results today and alls good. Next one will be in 6 months. Hip replacement operation scheduled for 29th August, so not long to wait for that now.

Hope that all is well with you too.

    Take care of yourselves.

  • Fantastic news! Have been up to Scotland -hence late reply but I couldnt be more delighted.

All fine with us- hope all goes smoothly with the op.

    xx

  • Thank you, hope that you had a nice time in Scotland.xx

  • So sorry for the late reply - we have been away in the Isle of Wight staying in a dome. Mum and dad surprised us and stayed with us one night so that was lovely.

so pleased all is well with the ct scan and you must be happy the op is not long to wait. I hope all goes well and do let us know xx

  • Hi how are you both doing? How did the hip op going?

Dad is doing well although he says he's had a cough for 3 months which worries me, but then he is always coughing due to COPD. He has is follow up appointment on 3rd October but I cant help but worry about chances of re-occurance. They are still baby sitting though and keeping going which is amazing!

My mums cousin has just been diagnosed with incurable lung cancer which is very sad :( What an awful disease.

I hope you are all keeping well xx

  • Hi there, so glad that your dad is doing well and sorry to hear about your mums cousin.

My husband had his hip replacement on 29th August and the next day he had breathing difficulties and had a CT scan which found a blood clot on the lung and fluid in the stomach. He was then transferred to another hospital for treatment. He came home after 9 days and is now on a drug like warfarin for 3 months. The hip operation went well and he is doing his exercises every day and gradually getting stronger. I was an absolute wreck while all this was going on and traveling nearly 2 hours to a hospital didn't help. He said that he will not go through any more operations and just take his chance.

Good luck for the follow up appointment next month. I will be thinking of you.

  • Oh no I am so sorry to hear of his complications! That must of been so scary. Its a subject close to my heart as my sister passed away from a clot on her lung at 35 and my mum has had 2 and on warfarin (or apictaban now) So pleased he is on the mend now though.

Thank you. I am hoping all is well x
