Bloody stool on and off for 14 years

To start this off, HI.

I was recently diagnosed with a rare hodgkin's lymphoma called NLPHL, on Oct 22th of this year. Just got my stage bout a week and a half ago, I was stage 1. Pet/CT scan shows I only have the cancer in my right armpit area.

Moving along. Since 2004 I had this bleeding when I pooped. When it first started, there was alot of blood in the toilet. As the years went on it kinda retreated. From 2004 until 2009 it was off and on. 2010 came and I rarely seen any blood. So about 8 years I had minimum bleeding. This week I've noticed blood again, mixed with the stools. This is a on going issue for 14 years. I have stomach issues for 14 years as well. I have always pooped more than the average person per day.

Should I worry about this? Being that it's been soo long?

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Faceybaby.

I'm sorry about your cancer diagnosis but it's good to hear that it's stage 1 and contained.

In regards to your toilet troubles, if the blood has come back and you're worried then the best thing to do would be to see your doctor as they will be able to tell you if this is any cause for concern.

Hopefully you'll hear from some of our other members who have been in this position too.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Faceybaby. Welcome to the forum.

I should start out by saying that I'm not a doctor and I have no medical qualifications.

Blood in the stool should always be reported to your doctor for investigation. Given your recent medical history, you really must now go back to your GP, who I think will arrange an urgent colonscopy. FWIW, most people who poop blood turn out NOT to have bowel cancer, but that doesn't mean you should ignore this.

It's another stress to add to the pressure you're under already with your lymphoma diagnosis, but please don't let this put you off going back to your GP.
