Bowel cancer

Hi my dad is 78 and in May was told he has a tumour in his lower bowel. He has refused all treatment so has just been left to get on with things. They were talking about radiotherapy to stop the bleeding but can't even do that as they say it will make the growth swell and block his bowel. He's currently in hospital as he had a couple of falls and was subsequently diagnosed with kidney failure. They haven't told us what stage he's at or how long he might have left. We also don't know what to expect. Sadly Macmillan have been no help. I live 300 miles away so it is really hard for me not being able to visit every day. I rely on my family near to him to update me. I have a couple of questions. 1. Is it true that they don't give you any idea about how long you have left anymore? 2. Should they know what stage the cancer is? Should they tell us? He lives alone and I'm so worried about him.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Sturisoma although I'm really sorry to read about your dad's bowel cancer.

As you're living quite far away would it be possible for you to seek out your dad's permission so you could speak directly to his medical team? If your dad does give his permission you would then be able to get accurate information on how is getting on and get any questions, just like the ones above, answered. In the meantime do feel free to have a chat with our cancer nurses. Their lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and can be contacted on 0808 800 4040.

I know you wanted to have a general idea of what to expect as the time draws near so I'm including some information we have about what to expect in the final weeks and days. This can prove to be a bit of a tough read so do only go through it properly when you feel ready to do so or possibly when you have someone with you.

Some of members have found themselves in similar situations and I hope you hear from them soon.

    Kind regards,
