Just diagnosed

I am 72 and have just been diagnosed with cancer of the tongue.  Recommended treatment at this time is 6 weeks radiotherapy, which sounds as if it will be daunting.  Any advice would be welcome.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Mrsrobust although I'm sorry to read that you've just been diagnosed with tongue cancer.

Wishing you all the best with the radiotherapy when the time comes.

  • Thank you so much for this. I am going to the hospital tomorrow to have the mask fitted. The worst thing (apart from the diagnosis! ) so far is the news I have to have 6 teeth out under General anaesthetic next week.

I am going to set up a Rota for friends to drive me (120 mile round trip involving the A14 ). However, could you let me know of your experience 're parking? At present I plan to use the Park and Ride) but is there ample parking onsite at the hospital?

    Many thanks.

  • Hi mrs

i would park in the main hospital car park .... if you show you treatment schedule to the parking office they will give you a ticket for the whole week which will only cost you £5 for the week which is better than paying 3.50 a session

it then if yellow and black twisty thing Round the back you can’t miss it ... it’s a walk back to oncology but ok in the summer.

shout if you need anything else

  • Hi mrs

the mask fitting process is an experience

for me it was a realisation that “this is happening now” for some it can be quite a daunting process too ..... if you have seen the film alien ... from my own experience I can only liken it to that.

Your mask is your friend though ... I called mine Frank .... it’s with you for every radiation treatment .... and you get to take it home

mine hangs in the garage and I say good morning to frank most mornings

lets us know how you get on
