Can a biopsy allow the cancer to spread faster?

Hi all,

This may seem like a really stupid question but I was diagnosed with ovarian clear cell carcinoma cancer on Tuesday. I had an ovarian cyst removed from my right ovary on March 10th and while they were doing the laparoscopy they took a biopsy sample from both ovaries.

They said the left ovary showed clear cell carcinoma. I hadn’t shown any of the symptoms of ovarian cancer at all in the run up to March 10th. Now, after the biopsy, I look like I’m nine months pregnant my stomach is so swollen and I can relate to most of the symptoms.

I’m worried that snipping the sample out for the biopsy has in some way ‘released’ the cancer. Does this make any sense at all? Could this happen or am I worrying unnecessarily about that. My imagination is on overdrive.

any advice/reassurance would be very welcome.

Thanks x

  • Hi there ... I'm sure there could be a few reasons why your stomach is swollen , and sadly we can't say why as wer just like you ... not professionals ... so if i were you, I'd get strait on to your Drs or oncology team ... l know l have a couple of oncology nurse numbers , so hopefully you have been given some ...

And I used the McMillan help line when I needed medical advice and support in the early days ...

Hope you get the info you want ... and remember wer always here for moral support, whenever you need it ... x

  • I'm not a doctor.

There has been some question about whether this is a real risk, but a recent study concluded that this was very unlikely to happen, and the benefits greatly outweigh the tiny risk. Anyway, until we find some scanning technique that's able to look deep inside a living patient and read the biochemistry of individual cells then biopsy is the only viable option.

As for your particular case, the timescale of a month seems far too short for cancer inadvertantly spread by biopsy to be a viable reason for your symptoms.

    Hi Jo,

This is a very interesting question, but one that I cannot answer. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 8 years, so know very little about ovarian carcinoma. Can I suggest that you phone the nurses on this site? Their number is Freephone from any UK landline. They are open from Mon – Fri, 9.00am – 5.00pm. They are very helpful and they should have the medical expertise to be able to help you.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
