thc oils alongside chemotherapy

Hi, one of my family members has just been diagnosed with lung and brain cancer. She has been given anywhere from 2 months to a year with chemotherapy. She is due to start Wednesday and I was wondering if she would still be aloud chemotherapy with thc in the bloodstream? She hasn’t had any thc oils yet as we arent sure if they would pull the chemo. I know there is no clear evidence and I am also fully aware of the penalties that come with it but I am willing to try anything and so is she. Has anyone had any experience on this matter?

thankyou in advance

  • Hello and welcome to the forum, although I'm sorry that you have to join us due to such unfortunate circumstances.

Alas, there is no evidence at all to support the idea that various forms of cannabis and hemp oil have any effect on cancer.  There is more in this blog post. I don't suppose I need to warn you that this is a legal minefield, and there are plenty of scammers out there, not to mention deluded conspiracy nuts and mistaken well wishers.

It is possible that a complementary therapy such as acupuncture might be help your family member to cope better with the chemo, and so improve her qualify of life.

Of course, this is a decision that only your family can take.

  • Hi thank you for that.. she doesn’t want it in an attempt to cure the cancer but merely help her along with the chemotherapy like appetite and nausea control which has been shown it can help. My question was more along the lines of can the doctors refuse the chemo if they find it in her blood? She obviously wants the chemo and doesn’t want it to be withdrawn but she is only small and fairly skinny so she will need to eat more and such

    thankyou

  • Hi,

You should probably be having this discussion with her oncologist who will know exactly what chemotherapy she is having - there are dozens of options in hundreds of combinations, each with different side effects which vary from patient to patient.

By and large my opinions on this are similar to Telemando's but there is evidence that cannabinoids are effective in mitigating side effects. Whether or not they are better or worse than conventional medications such as steroids, domperidone or omeprazole is unclear as there has been little or no published research on this.

    Good luck

    Dave

  • Hello helpwithcancer and welcome to the forum, although I'm sorry for the reason that brings you here.

I noticed that both telemando and davek already gave you great advice but I just wanted to pop by and mention that if you feel like speaking to one of our cancer nurses might help as well they'll be happy to take your call. Their phone number is 0808 800 4040 and they are available Monday - Friday from 9 a.m – 5 p.m.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Dave thank you for that. She has had some steroids to help the swelling on her brain but not done too much. I appreciate you taking the time to attach the link. I will get her to speak with her doctor about it next time she is there thanks again
