Newbie to lung cancer

After 10 weeks of being treated for laryngitis and chest infections, my partner has finally been diagnosed with lung cancer on 31st January. It has caused palsy with one of his vocal chords resulting in his speaking with a hoarse voice. As his partner and carer, I feel as if I'm a refugee in a whole new world. I remain cheerful and very positive on the outside for his sake. We still have to wait another 2 weeks before they do a biopsy and can finally tell us exactly what we are facing and if there is anything that can be done. In the meantime, his breathlessness continues to get worse each day.

  • Hi pantry4pete. Welcome to the forum, and I'm very sorry to read what's happening to your partner.

A cancer diagnosis is just as devastating to friends, family, and partners as it is to the patient. You're also in that terrible position that something had been found, but you don't know how bad it's going to be. You're hoping that things might still work out reasonably well, whilst fearing the worst.  I'm afraid a typical cancer diagnosis isn't made in one go, it's a case of tests and more tests, with waits for results in between. It's highly frustrating and as each appointment looms, so stress levels build up.

This is just to let you know that you're not alone and we won't judge you here. If you're angry and frustrated you can rant here. You can share the good and bad news as it happens. Meanwhile, accept my best wishes.

  • Thank you very much for your encouraging reply. I really appreciate what you have told me and also for the 'all clear' if I need to rant. Hopefully, the wheel will do one revolution sometime soon. Kindest regards, Pete
