Invasive ductal breast cancer

I found a lump back in March and because I have family history of breast cancer I went to the Drs the following day. I was referred to the breast clinic and was seen 2 weeks later, I had an ultra sound and a needle biopsy which when I went for results two weeks later showed fatty tissue, I have yearly mammograms ( due to family history) and the consultant felt I should wait a few weeks as I was due my yearly mammogram he then examined my lump and said he didn't feel this was fatty tissue and whatever the mammogram showed it should be removed anyway. So in April I had the mammogram went for results to say all clear, but to follow up and have this tiny lump removed and checked. I had a lumpectomy on 24th May and the consultant was amazing reassuring me they got it all and to wait for results from lab. On the 12th of June I returned to the consultant to have wound checked and get my results. I was told that they was really shocked by the results as unfortunately it was grade 2 invasive ductal cancer this lump was tiny 5mm I was booked in for an MRI to see if anymore lumps could be seen the following week, this was clear and yesterday I had sentinel node biopsy where three nodes were removed I am returning to consultant on the 19th to see if any cancer cells were present in these nodes, I will then start radiotherapy and will go on tamoxifen once treatment is complete. Been a whirlwind of emotions which hit me tonight.

Im really nervous about the radiotherapy... how is it? Anyone else been through similar and can share their experience?

thanks

Elaine

  • Hi Elaine

You have definitely had a whirlwind of emotions and roller coaster for your emotions too. I have been through a different treatment path, I had a mastectomy in September 2015, chemotherapy and then radiotherapy. To be honest I didn't find the radiotherapy bad at all. I had 15 sessions over three weeks, targeting my chest and my underarm. I found traveling to hospital through the traffic more challenging than the treatment. It was over in minutes, sometimes it took longer to line you up on the machine than it did for the treatment. They plan music during it, so quite calm and relaxing. If you have any questions I am happy to help if I can.

    best wishes

    Audrey

  • Thanks for your reply

I am glad radiotherapy wasn't to bad for you.

I haven't got a start date yet but I'm sure it will be soon enough.

I am feeling alot better emotionally today I'm sure there will be good and bad days along the way xxx

    thanks Audrey

  • Hi Elaine

You are very welcome. Keep in touch to let me know how you are doing.

Always here if you want a chat. x

  • Hi Elaine,I also had fifteen sessions of radiotherapy for breast cancer,it was a doddle, worst part was travelling an hour each way and then on machine for minutes, nothing to worry about, good luck x
  • Thank you for your reply

im not so worried about the radiotherapy now.

    Thanks everyone

  • Hi sorry to hear its cancer. I like you was in family clinic due to family history wherein lump was noted in mammo, had biopsy & ultrasound to be told grade 2 invasive ductal breast cancer. This was 26 dec so this was not great. I had lumpectomy & sentinel node biopsy and after an agonising wait for those results then had 6 weeks of radiation & started tamoxifen before radiation. Radiation isnt too bad - just remember to use E45 lotion morning & night. I reacted to radiation but not everyone is the same. I had nausea on day 2 and last week of radiation. I got very pink skin and my skin peeled & birned after my treatment. I also got a very nad cold but each cancer is individualistic so you may not react like i did. I wished i had been told what to expect as it would've helped but I've come out the other end. I just hope & pray it goes very well for you & if at any time you need to chat we're all here. All the best.
  • Thank you so much for your reply jbains

i found the lump and unfortunately it didn't show on mammogram so had MRI to rule out anymore... thank you for the heads up for future treatment... how long after lumpectomy and node removal did you start radiotherapy?

    Thanks again

    Elaine

  • Hi Elaine,I think it was about three to four weeks after surgery before I had the radiotherapy, hope you are ok,take care, christine x

  • Hi

    Hope u r doing well.

I read your story saying Cancer was diagnosed after the lump was removed? Was that missed on ultrasound and fine needle aspiration biopsy? I had fnac which showed fibroadenoma and i have been told same not to do anything with it. Makes me worried if fnac is not accurate?

Please if u can let me know

    Thanks
