Tongue cancer

Hello all

I was diagnosed on Monday with tongue cancer! To be honest I am all a bit numb to it really. In my head I have a lump and I am aware that lump is cancer but don't associate it with me having cancer is that weird??

I am so lucky I have had the most amazing service from the NHS so far they have acted quickly and the hope is they can cure it. I am booked for an operation in 3 weeks to remove the lump and my lymph nodes and I am scared about that but know this needs to be done to get rid of the lump.

What I am really struggling with is eating and drinking now. My mouth is so painful I don't know what I should do. When I met with the consultant I was so overwhelmed with the information I was being given I didn't think to ask him what I could do. I am also pregnant so it's important that I am eating and drinking enough any advice or ideas?

thank you for reading

  • Hi Trinny

sorry to hear about your results, I'm not surprised you are feeling sad and don't ever apologise for moaning!!!  Take everything a day at a time, some days you will feel positive and others you really won't.   It's allowed, you are going through hell at the moment but you will get through it.

I agree with everything Vatch has said, I found this is probably the worst bit because you don't really know what's going to happen.  Being told the plan and then actually going through it are totally different, I also set myself goals.

I would also say to read Nicolas thread.  I found it really helpful, bl**dy scary and honest, but reading about others going through different stages of similar treatments and that you're not the only one this is happening too is a big help.

  • Thinking of you today Trinny, hope everything goes as planned xxx

  • Good Morning All

I can't believe it has taken so long for me to feel even partly normal!

it has been an eventful week since my first op! Unfortunately not everything went as to plan as it should. First op on the 9th went on much longer than planned so rather than 5 hours I was under for 8.

woke up with a tracheostomy was not happy and when the consultant did the ward round on the Thursday insisted that he do something about it. What happens next is a blur but from what I was told I started vomiting blood everywhere. Was rushed back to theatre even though I was apparently arguing the whole way there that I wasn't having another op. They found a small bleed which was made worse due to me using blood thinners during pregnancy but the consultant decided he would investigate more and luckily they did because he found a clot on my lung.

They then decided to keep me sedated for 2 days to recover in ITU but now I am on the mend, I'm not gonna lie I've been low over the last week and have wanted to give up but now I am back to feeling positive. Long way ahead of me and this is by no means over with yet but I'm fighting again

  • Hi Trinny

im so glad to hear from you, have been wondering how you were.

sorry to hear you've been through such a rough time but I'm glad to hear you're feeling positive again.  I hope you can feel yourself healing and getting stronger each day.  It will take time but you'll get there.

Are you home now?  What's the plan going forward?

Sending you a big hug! Xxx

  • Still not home plan is that I should be discharged Monday or Tuesday. I haven't a clue what the plan is going forward I know the consultant wanted me to have radiotherapy but he hasn't expanded on that yet.

Right now I feel completely exhausted and overwhelmed by the whole experience. I am going to spend the last few days in hospital relaxing

  • Hi Trinny,

I've been through the same surgery as you've just had, and had follow up radiotherapy and Chemo treatment.  ( three years now)

I'm so pleased your through the surgery now and recovering ok. If you are going to have treatments It will be a tough road, but the staff in oncology are such wonderful people and will support you all the way. You will find the strength to get through and remember we are always here if you have any questions or worries on the way. Try and remain as positive as you can as I really believe it makes so much difference to your recovery time. My very best wishes to you

    Carol

  • I have just had it confirmed that they want me to have a six week course of radiotherapy. While it's not a complete surprise it does make you feels down because it feels like it's never ending.

Oh well, I'm sure I will be ready for the fight again in a few days

  • Hi

I'm so sorry to hear your news but on a positive note it's  really quite normal for most to have radiotherapy if any nodes are involved. They need to make sure you get the best possible outcome/cure and get back on with your life.

Keep in touch and good luck with the treatment, it will be over before you know it.
