Stage 4 esophageal cancer

So I finally saw the oncology team on Thursday...

Stage 4 esophageal cancer with secondaries in liver, lungs, spine and hips. Inoperable and incurable so basically some radiotherapy and chemotherapy to try to slow things down, a stent (surgical ring) being fitted so I can swallow liquids easier but then just palliative care.

Mentally im okish as I have support and was prepared for the worst possible news. Physically im in bits with back pain despite oramorph and im struggling to swallow liquids but the radiotherapy and stent will hopefully help with that. Im definitely having the stent and the radiotherapy but im unsure about the chemo as the side effects seem horrendous and it only buys me a month or two extra.

  • I'm really sorry about your diagnosis Sam but fingers crossed the radiotherapy and chemotherapy can help slow things down. Have you been able to discuss your concerns about the side effects you could get from the chemo with your medical team? Do have a chat with them about this when you can as they will be able to give you all the information you need to help you make your decision about whether to go ahead with it or not. And as I mentioned on your other post our cancer nurses are just a phone call away and will be happy to talk this through with you as well.

Do you have a date for when the stent is going to be fitted? I hope you don't have to wait too long and that it helps making swallowing liquids much easier for you.

Let us know how you get on with the stent and the radiotherapy when the time comes Sam. We'll be thinking of you.

    Kind Regards,
