too young my ****

I'm 52 after a year of IBS and a boutique of diarrhoea I went back and gave a stool sample . That was August ish.  After Christmas I went back and was given an appointment with a consultant by gp.

A week later a colonoscopy and endoscopy.

Last Friday I was diagnosed with cancer and it has to be taken out next week.

Why did this not show up in the stool sample and why am I being told that I am too young obviously I'm and others are not and if it's being said we're too young why is the government campaign for the over 60s. I'm still in shock and terrified of drastic change with a bag for a bumper bearing in mind that's all that's the problem.

  • At the age of 54 I was told I was too young to have Cancer, based on the NICE guidance to GPs back in 2013. So I was referred down a non-urgent diagnostic route. After several months I was diagnosed with Grade 4 Cancer - maybe it would have been caught earlier if not for NICE's obsession with age 65.

The NICE guidance for Cancer of the Oesophagus changed in 2014 due to so many of us being diagnosed at Stage 4, despite presenting to our GPs with classic symptoms. At the same time there was all sorts of rubbish coming out effectively blaming men for not going to the GP with cancer symptoms!

As far as I remember, the stool test is only to check for the presence of blood which is one (but not the only) symptom of bowel Cancer.

I hope you get the right treatment now that you've been diagnose and have a good outcome.

    Good luck!

    Dave
