struggling & heartbroken my mums terminal throat cancer.help

hi my 85 year old mum has been in hospital 5 weeks now , they done lots of tests and told us on the 23rd dec she had throat cancer .

she cant keep solid food down and can manage a little soup , she could not swollow her tablets yesterday , and now weighes 4 stone 10

they had the md (or wot ever its called ) yesterday , and the cancer nurse phoned me last night to tell me it had spread slightly to near her kidney and her pancreas , she then basicly told me they want to fit a stent , if she doesnt have the stent she may only live around 3 months and gradually starve to death  if she has the op thats with risks it may be a extra 3 months or so.

has anyones elderly parents or family had this opperation as herd its a long op and wasnt the best afterwards, i live a 120 miles from my mum , which i had to travel back home yesterday before the meeting ,

iv never felt so alone and scared , please any advice would be greatly received

thank you xx

  • Hello nessbx,

I am so sorry to hear about your poor mum who has been in hospital five weeks now. It must be so hard for you to see her unable to swallow. I hope you will meet others here who have experience of having the stent fitted or who have looked after a loved one who has had to make a similar difficult choice.

It must be frustrating for you to be living 120 miles from your mum and all the travel must make you feel rather tired.

If you have any medical question or want our nurses' advice on anything, you can ring them on this free number 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. They will be happy to talk you through each option and to answer any question you may have. They're really friendly too!

    Best wishes,
