  • Hi hughie sorry to read the reason you joined you have come to right place for support and information . Hope you ok with chemo and you not haven to many side effects . Hope you got support from you family as well not for you to be on you own at time like this . My situation is my mother she was told she had bowel cancer two years ago in July . She went for scan in July this year and was told they found mass turned out to be on her bowel .They also told here it's inoperable the turmour pressing on the blood vessels . I understand what you must be going through it so heart breaking being told this terrible news . Any time you need chat I'm here .

  • Hi Hughie cannot truly understand how you feel as I am not the person with cancer. My 34 year old son was diagnosed end of april with bowel cancer, he had the tumour removed with a lot of lymph nodes 3/4 of which were cancerous.  The bowel op went well and he did not need to have s bag.  Unfortunately for him the bowel cancer had spread to his liver, it is full of tumours and cannot bee operated on.  He goes every two weeks into hopsital for 3 days of chemo and takes a chemo trial drug twice everyday.  As his family, my husband two daughters and his new wife we are the other side of the fence anda try to understand how he feels..  He has had 12 cycles of chemo and will continue in this fashion as long as the trial drug holds back the tide.  He knows that he is terminal but it must be very difficult to accept and he can get very angry about it all.  We have to be positive and try to make everyday count.  Obviously you have a young family, but there are people on this site who have been given a bleak outlook and are still here several years on.  Progress is being made with cancer research and for all thos with this dreadful disease I hope some major breakthroughs are close to being out in the public domain.  I think you have to talk about it.  think i have run out of space. Take heart and talk to people about how you feel. leslie

  • Hi Hughie

I'm Hayley I'm 42 and I'm also stage 4 bowel cancer with large liver involvement.

I'm on folfox I've just finished round 7 today I go through the chemo unit every 2 weeks for a couple of hours then home with a pump.

My liver bloods are behaving but my neutrophil count has been low a fee times so chemo was delayed. But the folfox is working well on the liver, they haven't shrunk but are showing much less activity now .

I asked about if I would ever be able to have surgery and although the Dr didn't say absolutely no he said only about a 10% chance of getting that way . I've read lots of other people's stories of being stage 4 inoperable that after lots of chemo are now operable so I'm not giving in yet but it is scary Yes x

If you get chance have a look on the beating bowel cancer forum I don't know how to put a link just Google it . As it is solely for people with bowel cancer there are more people to talk to and they have lots of experience it is a great site for us .

    Sending you some hugs

    Hayley xx

  • Hi Hughie. So sorry to hear about your news. I am in a similar position albeit different original diagnosis (Oesophageal Cancer). Had surgery chemo etc...but after CT in September results showed it had spread to liver now inoperable.

I am now on chemo (Taxol) but also importantly positive to take Herceptin which I have started too. You do hear many positive stories with people in our position and all I can say is that you be very positive, keep active and fit as possible. I believe that if we all in the same position take this stance, lifespan can extend for quite some time, and you never know about continuing cancer drug development too??

    All of the best Hughie.

    Simon.
