My dad, results in for lung cancer. Help :(

Hi, I posted not too long ago about my dad having problems with Mythenia Gravis and being checked for cancer via a PET(?) scan in Stoke.

Confirming what they found with the camera in his lung, there is a cancerous tumor measuring 22mm. I believe it's isolated. There is also something to investigate within the adrenal gland but they think it's 'not connected'.

Ofcourse I'm worrying and checking survival rates and as much information as I can about it. I'm guessing it's at stage 1A which seems much better than the later stages that my grandfather had :(

They have mentioned operating, which I hope they can. He has COPD too which I hope doesn't affect decision.

My question is who has experienced others with type 1A and maybe with and without the operation, and how possible is it to be 'cured' to a certain degree? As survival rates still always seem alittle bleak :(

So close to my dad and have a newborn son. Don't want to lose him ofcourse and would hate my son to experience what I did with mum grandad I loved :(

All help appreciated xx

  • Hi there, sorry to see about your dad. I done a lot of research on squamous cell carcinoma, non small cell lung cancer. From what I recall if they can operate and remove the tumour, providing it hadn't spread then a cure could be possible as the primary site would once again be cancer free. They would probably give treatment after the operation to be sure. I don't know if copd would effect his choices or not. There were a few people on here earlier in the year who had successfully receive treatment for early stage lung cancer, I think the treatment was call brachytherapy or something similar. Good luck to your dad.

  • Hi, thank you so much for the thorough and informative reply. It has put me at ease alittle more. I believe it hasn't spread anywhere but the adrenal gland is only thing needing to be cleared up now. Hopefully they do chose to operate :)
  • my dad was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the the lung, he had full pneumonectomy, and has been cancer free for 7 years, he also has severe COPD, it didn't make any difference to his surgery, he has since had mouth cancer too, and has been clear of that for 3 years. Wishing your dad the best of luck.
  • I have stage 3 lung cancer. I have had an op which the surgeons are happy they have removed all the cancerous lobe of the lung, along with some nearby lymph nodes. I am starting a treatment of chemo to "mop up" any remaining cancer. From the moment of diagnosis all the doctors have talked of curative intent. This was explained to me, that as long as there was no complications they saw no reason why I could not be cured. All is on course, so what I'm saying is yeah lung cancer has a poor recovary rate, but that is mainly because there is usually no symptoms until its advanced, so in the case of your Dad it sounds as if they have got it very early so I would think he has a very good chance.

  • Thank you Winstanners and that's great to know :) glad to hear your dad made a full recover!

Thank you Graham, sorry to hear about your cancer but great to see you are fighting it with success and I'm sure you will be on the meand fully too.

I hope I haven't appeared insensitive by posting the above, when others are facing more aggressive stages!

I hate cancer! Going to get myself doing another charity event to raise money me thinks... anything to help!

  • I don't find your post insensitive at all. I love to read a good prognosis and success story.  I can't help but wish it was my dads happy ever after, but I'm so pleased some people are winning in this battle.

  • Echoing others, of course its not insensitive and I'm sorry if it made you think that. Cancer is devestating for those who get it and those around them no matter what stage. I wish your Dad a full recovery.
