Polycythaemia Rubra Vera PRV

This may be stupid and I could have the complete wrong end or the stick, but I was told today that I have PRV. (polycythaemia Rubra Vera).  I have looked this up and its rare 1-3 in 100,000 have it and in most cases can live with it, but there are some very severe complications symptoms involved.

I know that you should not over think theses this but im only 31 years old and my father passed away last month due to an enlarged heart and a blood clot, so Im thinking the worst

Dose any one hear have PRV ? And is there any advice?

  • Welcome to the forum Silentwest although I'm sorry for the reason it has brought you here.

Admittedly I haven't heard of that before but I have just had a look around our website and found some information about it. Just click here to find out more.

I'm also very sorry to hear about your father's passing and can completely understand your train of thought at the moment but try not to jump to conclusions if you can. Hopefully the information I've provided will help put your mind at ease but if you do have any more questions you can call our specialist cancer nurses. You can call them for free if you're in the UK on 0808 800 4040 and are available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    I hope this helps.

    All the best,

  • I have had Essential thrombocythemia now polycythemia since I was 16.im now fast approaching 60.and I keep relatively well.i am not my conditions.i try my best to follow the doctors advice and keep taking the medication as best I can.the best advice I can give you is to be you not your diagnosis eat well keep alcohol to minimum and if you smoke try to stop or try to smoke less.be the best person you can be.i don't know if because I've had this for so long that I'm a bit relaxed about it but some people when they get a diagnosis later in life they become obsessed with it and it overtakes them such that it's all they talk about and they become it.be aware of the risks health-wise,go to doctors appointments/haematology appointments, but live your life.
