Hi Martin ..... I am sorry that your post seems to have slipped through without an answer. Woodworm on the site has had protate cancer and am sure will be happy to help you. You could pop a note on one of his threads asking him to read this thread.
Also, if you go onto the 'search forum' button on the purple strip at the top of the page and put in prostate cancer, threads from others in the same situation will come up and you can maybe post on them.
The nurses here are really knowledgeable and supportive and they can be contacted on the telephone number at the bottom of the page Mon-Fri during office hours.
I hope you get the help you need. Keep in touch and let us know how you are doing x
Hi Martin,
Sorry to hear you have prostate cancer. As the lovely Max has allready told you, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer about seven years ago. My psa was high at 70 with a gleeson score of 3+3=6. I wasnt offered surgery as the psa was so high but was put on hormone therapy for two years with 37 radiotherapy treatments about six months after hormone therapy had started. 12 weeks after radiotherapy had finnished my psa was hardly measurable at 0.01. I feel very lucky and had brialiant treatment. Sure there have been some side effects mainly from the hormone therapy but I have looked on them as a small price to pay for the result I have had.
There was another thread on here recently by a guy named Bobbert who lives in Ameerica and had to make the decision you have been asked to make. He opted not to have the surgery but has had Brachotherapy instead and is doing quite well too. If you have any questions, I will do my best to answer them.
I wish you well with your decision making and treatment and ask you to please stay in contact. Best wishes, Brian.
Hi Martin
Sorry about your cancer, I am in my eleventh year. PSA originally 105, Gleason 8.
My cancer was inoperable so went onto hormones.
I am currently on Abiraterone instead of chemo as a interim stage. My PSA last june was 1600 and is currently 540. So don’t get rushed into treatment.
If I could have a chose go for Robotic surgery NOT open surgery. I have had many years campaigning for men screening and treatments.
Hi Martin. Welcome to our exclusive club - that no-one voluntarily wants to join!
If you've been offered surgery then that is good news, because it means that your consultants think your cancer has been caught early enough to be cured.
I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer (PCa) five years ago. My Gleeson score was 3+4, Stage T2, PSA 5.6
I had a robotic radical prostatectomy in December 2010 (a very unusual Christmas present, you might say) at Bristol Southmead hospital. I recovered well and I have no incontinence issues. I couldn't have full nerve sparing so I do have ED, but it's worth mentioning that ED doesn't stop you having fun in bed - you just have to be a little imaginative. I have noticed some recent stirrings in my little soldier so I've not completely given up hope.
So far, the surgery appears to have worked. I've needed no further treatment and I'm having regular PSA blood tests to make sure everything is still Ok. As you can guess, those times are a little fraught with worry but most of the time I just get on with life.
I don't regret choosing surgery and I'm pretty sure I made the right decision. If you're being offered robotic surgery at a centre which does a LOT (over 100 each year) of prostatectomies then you should give it serious consideration.
