Oxaliplatin & Capecitabine

Has anyone experienced severe back pain whilst taking these?since my husband started chemo treatment last week Thursday the last few nights he gets severe back pain he takes 2 ibroorofan in the morning & that's all he needs he doesn't seem to get any pain in the day.

  • Hi Mrs T

Not the same chemo but I had severe pains in my joints all over my body also in my legs and feet. This lasted for a few days after treatment.  I told the doctor at my next review before my second treatment and in my case because the pains were so bad they did reduce the strength of the treatment.  I dont think they would do this if your husband only needs to take something in the night but tell him to keep a record of the pain is it everynight or does it wear off after a few nights.  He should be able to discuss this with the Doctor,  it may be one of the side effects and they may be able to suggest something.

  • Hi Mrs T = welcome here. My wife had those chemo meds and it took a while for the body to tollerate it. Best to check with the oncologist about the back pains. It may be possible to treat it. Perhaps they can alter the dose. Best to let them know

  • Hi Mrs_T,

I was on a regime that included both those drugs and I ached all over for much of the time. If you are in the UK, your husband should have been given a named lead nurse to contact about these sorts of issues. Failing that the district nurse, MacMillan nurse or the local Chemo team will be able to help. The contact details for the latter will be on his chemo card along with emergency numbers and advice for any A&E team should he ever need to go into A&E.

Chemo isn't pleasant but I wouldn't be alive today if I hadn't gone through with it, so my side effects were in my view a small price to pay.

    Good luck
    Dave
