looking for any help to come to terms with my prognosis

hello - I found out I have a brain tumour  just over 4 months ago. After the surgery i was given a 12 to 18 month prognosis. I started a 6 week cycle of radio and chemo almost immediately, but the subsequent scan showed the tumor had grown. I have now started further cycles of higher dose chemo.

Physically, Ifeel well but the tumor has reduced my eyesight and that has impacted some of the things I would normally do to keep myself busy.

The prognosis was and still is a huge shock and I know I need any in-sight or help offered.  Thanks

  • Thats great news Gary - I am so pleased to hear that!

I hope you are feeling a little better today so that you can enjoy your good news - go easy on the wine haha!

Will be in touch soon, you take care x

  • Hi Max

I hope you are well and that you and your family had a lovely Easter.  Weve had good weather so that has cheered me up.  Been having a few stomach problems lately so off to see the nurse tomorrow.  My steroid dosage has been reduced a little so hoping that will help in time before I start next chemo on 13th.

Meanwhile there's unopened Easter Eggs feeling unloved.  I will have to dress up as an Easter Bunny and take them to neighbours kids before they go back to school!

    Best wishes  Gary

  • Hello Max

I know Ive not posted in a while and I just wanted to leave you a message now as it will be my last one on the chat forum. Dont worry, although the side effects from my last chemo made me feel more unwell this time than previous times, I do feel better now. The reason is my eye sight going worse so unable to use my computer unless someone helps me.

I valued the support you offered when we did chat. It really helped when I needed it.

We are going away for a short holiday next week so looking forward to that.  I wish you a lovely day for your daughters wedding which must be getting closer?

My very best wishes to you, your family and Alfie!

    Gary

Gary ......... Am so sorry I didnt get back to you sooner.  Spent 4days in London for tests, results and chemo and then have had around 9days sleeping.  All is stable in the brain presently. Now feeling fairly normal and no chemo for 4weeks - hoorah! I am so sad to hear that your eyesight has deteriorated so badly and that you wont be able to post.  I totally understand but I will miss talking to you.

I so hope that you and your family enjoy your holiday and wish you all the very best with your ongoing treatment. Fingers x'd for us both!  Sending you a virtual hug and lots of love x

  • I have just joined this forum and just reading about different challenges being faced by Gary and others has helped.  I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma (a form of blood cancer) in 2013.  After a strict regime of chemotherapy lasting nearly a year, I had a bone marrow transplant in late 2014. In February 2015 during a scan to stage the myeloma, they found a fast growing lump in my right breast.  I have just had a mastectomy with lymph node dissection and am awaiting chemo.  While in hospital for breast surgery, I developed an obstruction in my small bowel. Now need further tests to find the cause.

Facing two types of different cancers already, I now live in fear of what they may find with my bowels or for that matter what happens next.

Most days I struggle as my son got married soon after my initial diagnosis and left home and my daughter followed a year later.  I feel lost and bewildered.  I am sure these feelings are only too natural.

Does anyone know of any groups or meetings where they can offer some form of counselling or therapy?

  • Hi Nazz

    Welcome to Cancer Chat.

We have information here about support groups which may be helpful to you.

There are other members here who live on their own, so I hope that by coming to chat you will feel less lost and bewildered.

Also, if you have any questions you would like to ask our nurses, they will be happy to help. The quickest way to contact the team is by calling freephone: 0808 800 4040 from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes
