Lymph node swellings, told likely metastatic

Hi… I can t believe I am here and am in total turmoil.

I am 59 and went to drs with firm neck lump. Was told it was a muscle and given muscle relaxant medication to take for 8 days. They didn’t work.  Went back and put on 2ww. Had ultra sound and was told accidentally “I think it is’. Then an immediate FNA was carried out there and then. A week later I got a report in my care saying likely metastasis but inconclusive. Ent said likely a lymphoma or spread from somewhere else.

I was then sent for full body  Pet-ct and head and neck MRI. I have also had a core biopsy.

These tests started 2 and a half months ago. Still no results and no appointment booked going forward.

Going out of my mind.

  • Hello Elly-May

I'm sorry to hear about the position that you find yourself in. It's obviously a really difficult time being given only half an answer about the potential cause of these swollen lymph nodes. We know that for many people this period of waiting and uncertainty can be really difficult, and it's natural to feel overwhelmed by things at times.

How long ago did you have the PET-CT and MRI along with the biopsy? Normally, you might expect to have some results from those tests within a couple of weeks so if it's been longer than that and you still have no news about the results or an appointment, then do get in touch with the hospital. If you've not got contact details for someone at the hospital, then speak with your GP.

Hopefully you will have some answers soon, and the specialists will be able to talk with you about the next steps in your care. In the meantime, I wonder if you might find it useful to talk things through with one of our nurses. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch Elly-May and let us know how you get on. We're here for you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello Jenn,

Thank you for your reply which is very comforting.

I had my Pet-ct and MRI a month ago and Core biopsies 3 weeks ago. I was told after each one that the results would be back within 7 to 10 days. No contact and no appointment booked. This doesn’t seem like normal protocol. I don’t have anyone assigned to me to contact other than call the unit who carried out the biopsies I guess or as you say my GP.

I may well do as you suggest and call one of your nurses. Thank you for this information.

  • Hello Elly-may

It's not unreasonable to be chasing these results after 3 weeks. Certainly, get in touch with your GP, but also you could contact the hospital PALS department. It's part of their role to help resolve concerns or problems when you're using the NHS.

Do give our nurses a call as well. They have a huge wealth of experience and knowledge and will be happy to help in any way they can.

Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn

  • Thank you. I will call my GP on Monday. I already have an issue ongoing with Pals as the trainee radiographer mouthed to her superior “I think it is” and then they swapped whereby immediate FNA was carried out. Then without any contact I received a letter of the report in my NHS app which outlined their findings. All of this with no phone calls or face to face appointment. So just left with my own faults. Pals have been brilliant I have to say.

i will chase and keep you updated. Many thanks again.
