Diagnosed with Lung cancer

I have recently been diagnosed with lung cancer and I feel so overwhelmed and anxious, I can't think of anything else from morning to night. I live with my husband but I can't talk to him as he says you don't know what's going to happen yet when I talk about the surgery and the pain afterwards. I don't know how to break the news to my 3 grown up children and I have 6 grandchildren aged 2 to 20

I break down and cry numerous times a day, my husband works so I have plenty of time during the day to worry. My children live in different places in the UK and all work so I'm left on my own and I n't know how to cope. I wish I didn't know about the cancer and was just left to live as I was as I have no symptoms. I see the surgeon this week, I don't know what questions I should be asking him.lease help I'm not coping. Thank you x

  • Hello Lovebeach

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been diagnosed with lung cancer. It can be a very scary and lonely place when you've been given that news, and I know how difficult it can be to cope with the waiting.

I do wonder if you might find it helpful to chat with one of our nurses ahead of seeing the Consultant later this week. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can, as well as help you think about any questions you might want to ask at your appointment. If you'd like to chat with them, they're available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

At the moment, it sounds like there are a lot of unanswered questions that are leading you to worry. Hopefully, at your appointment with the specialist, they will be able to give you some answers and reassurance. I know that many of our members will agree when I say that this period of uncertainty can be particularly difficult and that often once a treatment plan is in place, things seem a little easier to bear. In the meantime, our post about how to cope with waiting for news might be useful.

You mention that you've not yet told your children about your diagnosis. If this is something that you feel unable to talk to them about, would your husband be able to speak with them to let them know? Perhaps bringing them on board with this news will make things a little easier for you as you won't be worrying about how to tell them. It may be that when you've seen the Consultant later this week, you feel more able to talk with them. Again, our nurses would be happy to give you some further support about how you can talk with your extended family.

Don't be afraid to reach out to your GP as well, Lovebeach, if it all gets a bit much. I'm sure that your doctor will be able to offer some support in addition to the care that you will be having from the specialists at the hospital.

Keep in touch Lovebeach and let us know how you get on. Cancer can feel like a very lonely place at times but you are not alone; we're here for you.

    Sending you my best wishes,
