ER+ PR+ her2 low - can I request chemo alongside the radiotherapy if my surgery results come back clear? Worried about the cancer returning somewhere else

Hi, new here. I was diagnosed with grade 3 invasive ductal cancer of the left breast. ER+ PR+ HER2 low. 5cm tumour. So I have had a lumpectomy and 3 lymph nodes were taken too. I find out next week the results of the surgery (good margins/cancer in the nodes). If clear then I’ve been told that the route will be radiotherapy.

My question is can I request chemotherapy instead/along side? My worry is that even if the results are clear that the radiotherapy is the ‘soft option’ obviously it’s not but I’m worried that as it’s localised therapy then what if it is somewhere else or the cancer returns? I have been told that I have other benign lumps on my liver and spleen as well as  another in my breast, does this mean I’m more likely to develop a non-benign lumps?

I don’t relish the prospect of chemo but I don’t want to go through this again, I’d rather blast this thing (and anything else) now than do it again in a few years.

Maybe I’m over thinking?

  • Hi there,  I don't think you can request chemotherapy.  They won't do it unless it is completely necessary.  Sorry to say this but chemo does not always stop cancer from coming back or spreading.  Your team will have a meeting (MDT) to discuss your treatment plan and will do the best for you.  I know it is scary but you have to trust them.  Fingers crossed all will work out for you.
