Just diagnosed with lung cancer

Just been told i have small cell lung cancer. Localised to chest but had to have MRI incasr spread to brain. I am still in shock and wondering how long i may live. Chemo and radiology has been suggested.

I am scared, sad, feel guilty and alone. I hate being a burden to my 2 daughters.

  • Hello Molliemandy,

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis and I hope your next appointment goes ok. Being diagnosed with cancer can feel like a lonely place and we can all feel like a burden sometimes, but please don't be afraid to lean on your daughters for support. You're their mum and it would be important to them that they know how you're feeling and if they can help in anyway. If you'd like any guidance on cancer and your wellbeing, there is some advice on our website around how cancer can make you feel.

I hope posting has helped in some way,

  • Hi. First of all, you are not a burden to anyone. Your family and friends will want to help you as much as they can. Their support will help you through your 'journey'. I was also diagnosed with small cell lung cancer just after Christmas. Like you, I also had ct, pet-ct and mri scans. I am currently half way through my chemo and radiotherapy treatment. You would not have been offered that treatment if your prognosis was not good so I suggest you take it and stop worrying about how long you might live and look forward to enjoying your life when your treatment is finished. I'm not going to lie, it hasn't been easy but it's not as bad as I thought. Good luck with your treatment, stay positive and  keep fighting. You will be fine.

  • Thank you for your words. I think i am still in shock but getting there. Started chemo and radiotherapy starts from 6th.

Being on my own, liv8ng wise, i just hate relying on my daughters and a couple of good friends. I am mindful we all have our crosses to bear but as ypu said, i will accept any offer of help, to get me through the other side.

I am getting my haircut next week and will donate my long hair to the Princes Trust.  That will give me some control and in a little way, be helping others.

Thank you again, I needed to get a grip and sadly, I am not the only one going through this journey.

God bless and please keep me updated on your journey. Wishing you a celebratory recovery

  • Good morning M,

Believe me, the shock will slowly fade away and you will accept the situation and become more positive.

Donating your lovely long hair to the Princes trust is a fantastic jesture and will be a big help to others.

Starting your chemotherapy is a big step forwards. I hope you haven't experienced any bad side effects. If you do experience any problems, no matter how small, please mention them to the team that are treating you. They are there to help you and to make your 'journey' as easy as possible.

Like me, you will meet many people along the way and possibly make a lot of friends. It's amazing how a quick chat can give each other a lot of support.

I wish you good luck and hope that your road to a full recovery is not too bumpy. Stay strong xx
