Diagnosed with DCIS, grade 3. Will be having biopsy on lymph nodes soon. Has anyone else been through this? Is it painful?

Diagnosed with dcis , grade 3,smx soon and biopsy on lymph nodes, anyone else been through this, scared as to what to expect pain wise and worried about microinvasion

  • Hi Rainclouds,

A very warm welcome to the forum.

I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis and your subsequent concerns.  The biopsy on your lymph nodes will determine whether or not there is any microinvasion. You will receive an injection to numb the area first and you will wonder what you were worried about after it's all over. The area where the lymph nodes are removed from can remain slightly tender for a short time, but this is perfectly bearable. Do you have a date for the biopsy yet?

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

  • Biopsy and single mastectomy are both on 6th jan, this was all picked up on a routine mammogram screening so its all been a shock,  i keep been told dcis is nothing to worry about but I've read differently online

  • Hi Rainclouds,

There are different types of DCIS (Ductal Carcinoma in Situ). DCIS usually has no symptoms. It is usually found through changes seen on a mammogram (Macmillan). This is a non-invasive form of breast cancer where abnormal cells form in the lining of the milk ducts but do not invade the nearby breast tissue. If it spreads to surrounding tissues, lymphatics and blood stream it is known as invasive DCIS

Treatment for DCIS is crucial to prevent progression to invasive breast cancer. The prognosis for people diagnosed with DCIS is generally very good. However without treatment, it is estimated that 10-50% of DCIS cases may progress to invasive cancer over time (Cancer Research).

This is the value of having a mammogram, as there are often no symptoms in DCIS. If treated early, invasive breast cancer can often be successfully treated (M.D.Anderson Center).

I am sure that all will go well on 6th January. Do please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
