Cold capping?

Hi everyone. I'm just recently diagnosed with inoperable cervical cancer as tumour is not small, but waiting to see MDT and scans for treatment plan. My OBGYN has told me it will be a combination of radiation and chemotherapy. I would appreciate any advice from anyone else who has been through this.

I'm young and haven't had a chance to start a family and this scares me too. Has anyone else gone on to have a family after treatment for cervical cancer?

Also I've been reading a lot about cold capping. My hospital doesn't offer it, is it worth purchasing your own?

Thank you in advance.

  • Hi DolphinSea,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I hope you're getting on as OK as can be, and that it's not long to wait for your appointment to find out more.

Do make a list of any questions you have so that you can talk everything through at the appointment.

You are also welcome to speak to one of our nurses if you'd like to - you can reach them on freephone 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

Hopefully you'll get more replies to your post here soon, particularly from anyone with similar experience. You can also use the search bar at the top of the page to find other relevant discussions and people to connect with, if you'd like to.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hi Dolphinsea, I’m sorry to hear about your diagnosis and wish you strength and healing. I’ve got skin cancer so no direct insight for you, but wanted to pass on that my daughter in law was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer a few years ago at a young age, and chose to cold cap.

It was offered at her hospital and I don’t know what the difference will be for you if you buy your own, but wanted to pass on that the cold capping did (mostly) work for her.

Her hair got patchy around her forehead/hairline and she covered this with a headband, but overall she kept enough hair to look ‘normal’ - to me anyway, to her it probably wasn’t perfect but it was one less thing to feel bad about what with surgery, radiation, chemo, drugs, trying to keep her own life going etc. So if you want to try this I’d say ‘go for it’.

Her initial diagnosis was 2021 and although she still has regular follow-up and has to take medication, her hair is back to normal.

  • Hi Dolphinsea,  good luck with your treatment.  The cold cap machine is called a Paxman and they are not available to buy, too expensive.
