Newly diagnosed with stage 1 grade 3 breast cancer

Hi

I've just been diagnosed today following recent biopsies for calcifications.  Im struggling and feel so scared. I've been told I'll need 4 treatments, chemo, surgery, radiotherapy and then medication.

I have an MRI next week and I'm terrified it might show it's worse than they think. I won't get the results until 19th November. Can anyone recommend any tips on coping at this initial diagnosis stage. Im desperate to be positive etc but it's so hard and frightening.

Thank you

  • Hello SazzleD

I'm sorry ot hear that you were diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this week following a recent biopsy. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious and overwhelmed about what happens next.

For many people, this period of waiting for additional tests and the inevitable question of but what if? can leave them experiencing a rollercoaster of thoughts and emotions. I know that it seems like the 19th is a very long way off but hopefully when you see the team on that day, they will have all the information they need to answer your questions and offer reassurance about the next steps.

In the meantime, you might find it helpful to read through this post about how to cope with waiting for news. It might also hel pto talk things through with one of our team of nurses. I know they will be happy to offer any advice, information and support they can. If you'd like to chat with them, they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch SazzleD and let us know how you're doing. We're here for you.

    Sending my very best wishes,

  • Hi SazzleD,  I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis.  I had stage 3, grade 2 lobular breast cancer and they also did a MRI before treatment.  I think this is standard just to make sure it hasn't spread.  I then had surgery, chemo, radiotherapy and medication.  I found it hard but the best piece of advice I was given by my friend, she had breast cancer the year before me, is to try and keep to your normal routine as much as possible.  This helped me and it made me feel a bit more in control and normal, if that makes sense.  You know that there is a breast cancer forum on Macmillan and also one on the Breast Cancer now websites.  These are very helpful and full of useful and supportive information.  Good luck with your MRI next week and please let me know how you get on.

  • Thank you for your response. Its so frightening. Im just feeling so shellshocked and every twinge, pain or ache feels like it's spreading. Ill have a look at the post you've highlighted and thankyou again.
