Bosniak 4 cyst

My diagnosis of a Bosniak 4 cyst in my left kidney came by letter!  This was after two different CT scans following referral for investigation of frequent UTIs with evidence of blood in my urine. That in itself was a shock but further upset was caused by a second letter indicating a telephone consultation booked for 5 weeks later.  This has been a very difficult time feeling like a void of information and potential outcomes. I have read copious materials about treatments of this condition and the majority indicate surgical removal of part or whole kidney.  However there seems to be a growing school of thought that active surveillance in the case of a small cyst is the preferred option in the first place.  I have been left with a huge number of unanswered concerns and no focal point for having these questions answered.  Has anyone else experienced a similar situation and how did the treatment or active surveillance proceed?

  • Hi KidneyQ,

I'm sorry to hear that you've not been given all the information about this - I can understand you must have a lot of questions and uncertainty.

Although it's a bit of a wait until the consultation, it may be helpful to write down any questions or concerns you have ahead of that, so you can discuss everything.

In the meantime, if you'd like to talk things through with someone, our nurses are available. You can reach them either by posting in the 'Ask the Nurses' section of this forum, or by calling freephone 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

Otherwise, if others here have similar experience to share then hopefully they'll see your post and send a reply.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
