Worried about chemo side effects and possible hair loss. Can someone help me through this?

Hi

I have now reached the chemo stage after my mastectomy.

I am due to start 16 weeks of  chemo every two weeks  very soon.

I am very anxious and upset about hair loss and the brutal side effects they tell you about!

Can anyone who has been through this help me please

  • Hi there,

Good luck with your treatment. I hope it all goes well.  Chemo has come a long way compared to the past and huge improvements in the anti sickness drugs. The chemo nurses are fab and will most likely talk you through the  process as they sit with you at the beginning of each treatment and any effects that occur.

    Best wishes x

  • Hi fluffi1 l get.exactly where you are I had a hysterectomy almost 3 weeks ago and have ovarian cancer im teetering on the edge feel almost sick when I think about the road ahead. X

  • Hi, I’m a couple of weeks ahead of you. Looks like the same treatment plan of 8 sessions over 16 weeks. I started on EC last Friday. Felt fine over the weekend. Fatigue and nausea from Monday to Wednesday, fine from Wednesday evening through to now. I was also very worried about my hair. I’m using a cold cap, was fine, didn’t find it too uncomfortable. I did get a good trim before treatment as missed my last hair appointment due to surgery and it was all turning into a knotty mess. Also, I think even after treatment has stopped, you can’t go for a hair cut straight away.

  • Hi I am going to see consultant on weds hopefully gey a treat plan  sorted  x

Hi there I have decided against a cold cap.bI have to say I went for a wig today and it was surprisingly brilliant. So aI am going down that road. I start chemo next week so have yet to experience the side effects hopefully it won't be too bad. Wishing you well x

  • I know where you are coming from.I have spent many weeks sick with anxiety. Now I am accepting of what is to come.It takes time to put everything into place . It is a very scary place to be but we have to process all this and have no choice but to go down this road to make us well.

    Good luck with your treatment

    Xx

    Hi Ladies

    • If any of you use fingerprint to unlock phone or any apps as a precaution you may want to change to an alternative. As my chemo progressed I lost my fingerprints. I know it may sound bizarre but it's something that can happen. Even now 2 years later I still have problems I also have nerve damage to the tips of fingers. The bottoms of my feet were also affected but never as bad as fingertips, they just felt like I had something stuck on the sole of my foot. I also had weird cravings (I never had any through my 2 pregnancies) one minute I would be craving pickled onion crisps, a few mins later a greasy cheeseburger to lemon drizzle cake to full Sunday roast. Family would ask if I wanted anything bringing over that I might like to eat. All I could say was no just bring yourself I never know what I want from.obe minute to the next. You may want to keep a journal for not just the emotional side but the weird stuff or the laughs you have with other patients and the nurses xx
