Worried about chemo side effects and possible hair loss. Can someone help me through this?

Hi

I have now reached the chemo stage after my mastectomy.

I am due to start 16 weeks of  chemo every two weeks  very soon.

I am very anxious and upset about hair loss and the brutal side effects they tell you about!

Can anyone who has been through this help me please

  • Hey Fluff1,

I noticed you haven't had a reply just yet so I wanted to quickly stop by to reassure you that your post has been seen and that we're sending all our support your way.

Hopefully some of our members who have had chemotherapy for breast cancer will share what side effects they experienced and how they managed them with you soon, but if it would help to talk through some of your worries and concerns with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They will do all they can to answer your questions and hopefully in the process will help to ease your mind about starting chemo.

I hope this information we have about the side effects of chemotherapy and hair loss due to cancer treatment will help as well.

Do let us know how things are going when you can Fluff1, and remember that we will be here for you on every step of this journey.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you for your reply. I don't know if I am using this chat properly as this happens last time I posted.

  • You're welcome Fluff1.

And don't worry, you are using it correctly. Sometimes it can just be luck of the draw as some days and times on the forum can be busier than others, so it may just be that there's been a little less activity within the community when you've made your posts.

I do hope some of our members will pop by for a chat soon but feel free to reach out by posting on other discussions you find about this topic via the 'search forum' option at the top of the webpage.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Fluff1  I am sorry to hear about your breast cancer diagnosis.  I had operation and then chemotherapy.  I decided not to cold cap as it adds on about 3 extra hours of treatment.  After my first chemo my hair started coming out at two weeks.  I had long hair so cut it short before.  My scalp hurt when it was coming out so my husband shaved my head and it felt better.  Chemo can be hard but it doable.  I never felt any side effects really after first treatment but they do tend to build up as it continues.  The best piece of advice I was given is to try and keep to your normal routine.  I did try and do this and it really helped to keep feeling 'normal'.  I had this twelve years ago so a long time now.  I don't know why you haven't had a reply.  There is a breast cancer forum on Macmillan and it is very active on there with lots of ladies with advice and going through this too.  Good luck and I am happy to chat.

  • Thank you so much Lee. I think it is the fear of what is to come that is worse than the dealing with it. I can only go with it and deal with the here and now.Maybe I'm not using the site correctly!. Wishing you well

  • Hi, Fluff1, I have been where you are now and you will get through this! Chemo can be unpleasant but just try and have the mindset of dealing with the day you have and getting through it. Take help from family and friends when offered don’t say you’re ok when you’re not. I would have had a metallic taste in mouth and found pineapple helped either a lolly or put a wee chunk on a cocktail stick to flavour your mouth. My mastectomy was in 2018 and I’ve never looked back put the bra on each day and think nothing of it. Admittedly the hair loss did upset me, didn’t think it would but when I looked in the mirror for the first time I wept. I wore wee hats and found the bamboo ones very soft and comfortable. It’ll grow back.. I went grey after and just stayed grey but everyone deals with it different.

I got through it all …. Then took vulval cancer last year which I’d never heard of. Chemo and radio for 6 weeks Monday to Friday and through the other side and last two scans showing no signs of disease. Praise God!

my advice is to try and stay positive and surround yourself with positivity and one day at a time. You will get there!

  • Oh Eileen what a lot you have had to cope with! So glad you are ok now. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. It is such a scary place to be and probably the fear of the unknown is the worst. I know they have to tell you the worst case scenario but it is so daunting.I have no choice but to accept what is to come and hope I can be brave on this long road I am facing!

Thank you again wish you well

  • Fluff1;)

Hello:) I was diagnosed few weeks ago with cervical cancer, stage 3.

And I'm still waiting for last test results. Doctor said it will be chemo and  radiotherapy.

So basically I will be in the same place that you are right now. I'm scared and terrified of the side effects of chemo. And in my surroundings I never had somebody who have fight with cancer, so I don't know how it "looks like" if that make sense. I tried to read in internet, forums what to expect or what can we do, to survive it But I think I'm even more lost than I was at the beginning.

So if you want to chat with somebody who's in the same place you are I'm here.

Sorry for my grammar, English is not my first language, but I'm trying my best:)
