Oesophageal cancer

Looking for some positive outcome stories.

My husband 51 has been diagnosed with stage 2 oesophageal cancer. Had endoscopy which showed barrats disease and biopsies showed up the cancer.

going forward the plan is chemotherapy then a rest then surgery. Removing 6 inches of the oesophogus and moving the stomach up to rejoin. 6-8 months recovery.

Just absolutely broken and all I’m hearing is risks and I really need to hear some good outcome stories to give me hope.

Just want to wake up from this horrid nightmare.

  • Hello qejkaz-4jyfpi-veZsoj and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I'm sorry to hear your husband has been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. This must have been very difficult news to receive but I'm glad a treatment plan is now in place and I hope all goes well with your husband's chemo and surgery.

Hopefully some of our oesophageal cancer members will stop by soon to share their stories and advice but if you would like to discuss any of this further with one of our cancer nurses, you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all they can to answer any other questions you may have at this time and put your mind at ease about what's to come.

We're thinking of you qejkaz-4jyfpi-veZsoj and sending all our strength and support your way.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi,

I totally feel your pain. My partner was diagnosed in December and had 4 rounds of chemo, then the same surgery at the start of June. It's a very very long road of recovery. He has now been told hes cancer free but still needs another 4 rounds of chemo.

  • I hope he is doing well.
Dreading the surgery, as I know it’s going to be so very hard. We have also been told he may have to get chemo after too.  Thank you for sharing ️

  • Hi. Im Sarah's Partner!

The Recovery is hard but you really have to stay focused, i was in ICU for 2 weeks then got released came back in 2 days later with dumping syndrome.

Its a tough recovery but im 8 weeks post op, still tender round the ribs and would site but thats normal! Im experiencing alot of nausea after it so that's somthing to look out for!

    Good luck!

  • Thank you for this. Hubbie newly diagnosed and needed a real good news story. I’m a naturally optimistic person but currently can’t have a cohesive thought in my head. This gives me a little hope.

  • Hi,

I’m not sure if you are the originator of this thread but I wanted to say people do survive this terrible diagnosis. My husband was diagnosed in October 2020 during the COVID time. A long road - started  chemo Jan 2021 op 4th May 2021 complications which I won’t go into. Further chemo August 2021. Both times FLOT for 4 cycles over 8 weeks. Everything crossed he is doing well. Everyone is different but we live a normal life - he can eat most things just a smaller amount. I won’t go into everything as it’s overwhelming.

I don’t go on this site really now but I guess it’s coming up to 5 years since that dreadful night sitting in a car park in the dark and I wanted to say everyone is an individual and not a statistic. We have a local group who meet and some are over 10 years including one 17 years! Take one day at a time and if I can help with any questions just ask.

    still keeping the faith

    Milly
