Mum's been diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer that's spread to her bones. Has anyone else had this diagnosis?

My 84 year old mum has been diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer that has sadly spread to her bones. I was just wondering if there was anyone out there who has been diagnosed with the same and if you have any information about your situation that may help - even if the information is good or bad. Thanks

  • Hello Lytham45,

I am sorry to hear about your mum's diagnosis and thought I would share with you the information we have on our website on inflammatory breast cancer and if you have any questions or simply wanted to talk things through, you can call our nurse helpline on 0808 800 4040 Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Other members of our community have posted here before following a similar diagnosis and I will mention a few which you are welcome to respond to - for example  posted this thread a few months ago and  also posted a thread about being diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer back in November and was at the time looking to connect with others who had been through the same. These are just a couple of examples and there are many more and I hope someone with experience of inflammatory breast cancer will pop by and share their story with you.

Best wishes to you and your mum,

  • Hi Lytham 45,

Im sorry your mum is going through this. My situation is different as although I was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer I was 41 at the time and at stage 3. I can tell you the typical treatment for this would be chemo, followed by modified radical mastectomy and then radiation. Treatment is also dependent on receptor status. With it being diagnosed stage 4 from the outset the treatment path may be different for your mum. Her current health will also affect treatment e.g. I had to get heart scans before some of my treatment.

There are specific Facebook groups such as the inflammatory breast cancer detour that have members whose diagnosis will be the same as your mum's. I hope they can help with some of your questions. I'm happy to answer anything I can here.

Being newly diagnosed is scary. If you have already googled and panicked please remember that this will be outdated information.  If you haven't googled already please don't, it's hard to resist but it doesn't help.

Wishing you and your mum all the best.

    Margaret
