NSCLC - Stage 1 - Lobectomy

Hi everyone,

Yesterday was the day. Went in and got the results - very chaotic, train cancelled, found a cab, got to the hospital only 10 mins late after having phoned ahead. No dr. Saw a junior man, very uncomfortable with giving the bad news.

Biopsy results = cancer confirmed. Not a candidate for immunotherapy. They can only offer me surgery. I’m still reeling from the shock of the announcement. Somehow right up to the last minute I thought I was going to be ok.

Losing 25% of your lung capacity while still under 60 is a scary thing. Can anyone weigh in after a lobectomy and let me know how they are doing? Did any of you decline surgery, and choose radiotherapy instead?

  • I had a lobectomy Tuesday.  Got out of hospital yesterday.  No shortness of breath. It isn't as bad as I thought. I'm 70 years old. I'm sore, but they are good with painkillers.  The hardest part is sleeping. I had top right lobe removed.  It feels good knowing the cancer is out. I think you will be fine. I was terrified. Hope this helps.  Good luck.

  • Thanks Christine,

If you could do it, so can I. I’m just scared and sad about all the things I might not be able to do afterwards (I’m very active doing gardening, DIY, chopping wood, etc). You sound braver than me though.

I have a high pain threshold but this scares the bejeezus out of me to be honest.

Regarding sleeping, are there any tricks? Like lying on the non-operated side with an extra pillow or something?

Do you know what painkillers they give you in hospital/afterwards?

Thanks for your reply, I don’t feel quite so alone …

  • I am going to try and sleep on the reclining chair tonight. Will let you know who it goes. I'm very active too. That will help ypu so much after the op. I had Morphine.  I am on Paracetamol and Codiene. It just tight around my right side. Can't do much for four to six weeks. I'm expecting to get back to the gym and do what I was doing.  You can do this. The cancer will be out too.

  • Hello Britething

im a 59 yr old female

I too had right upper lobectomy 7yrs ago. It is a scary thing to go through but you will get all the support and help from the medical team looking after you.
    positivity is the key.
I used a “V “ pillow after surgery to aid sleep and comfort when sitting and a small soft cushion against my chest to support me when coughing

i I had a further lung  surgery, left side  lingulectomy 2 years ago and I’m still ok regards breathing and fitness

everything in moderation and listen to your body  I’m sure you will be fine after your surgery so please don’t be afraid and just listen to your body

i wish you a speedy recovery xx

  • Thank you both for your kind words and support. It is a daunting thing to go through. Knowing that others have got through it will help me to be brave. Surgery date is set for 3/7. Sleep is fitful and stress is through the roof. I will keep you posted.
