Newly diagnosed with gallbladder cancer

Hello, I have been diagnosed with gallbladder cancer. Would love to hear from anyone with similar diagnosis

  • HI Jayare and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat!

I am sorry to hear about your gallbladder cancer diagnosis. It must be a time when you have a lot of questions racing through your mind after getting this cancer diagnosis and there is information on our website on gallbladder cancer you might be interested in having a look at. If there is anything you want to discuss, our cancer nurses also have a helpline and you can get in touch with them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

You have come to the right place though to talk to others who have had a similar diagnosis and I thought I would mention a few members who posted here recently who were also diagnosed with this cancer. For example  posted this thread a few months ago about their gallbladder cancer diagnosis - at the time they had had major surgery and were about to start adjuvant chemotherapy.  also posted this thread about their stage 4 gallbladder cancer journey and was at the time also looking to talk to others who had had the same diagnosis so don't hesitate to drop them a line if you would like to connect. Those are just a couple of examples and I hope that you will hear from the experiences of others here who have been affected by gallbladder cancer.

Have you been given any indication as to what your treatment options might be at this stage? I hope that the treatment will go well for you and that you are given all the treatment information you need after your diagnosis.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Hi I am on treatment at the moment and my oncologist is very good chrmo and ummetheraphy but last 5 months no chrmo but the ummetheraphy not working so good also I have a hernia which may have been caused by my gallbladder removal I've had a ultra scan and my bowel as pireced through waiting to see specialist doctor Thanks for your concern and message very nice means alot Deborah

  • Thank you for your reply Lucie.  I had self admitted myself to A & E, in November 2024, with what I suspected to be a heart attack.  However, my heart was fine but they weren't sure what was causing the problem.  I had 2 CT scans which showed nothing.  4 days later my bloods showed that I had cholecystitis. My gb was removed, gb was bery pusy, but all was good,  I got sent home. Return January 2025 for post op check.  All good.  On 1st April I got call to attend hospital and was told that the results from lab had come back saying I had a rare for of cancer.  I was sent for a CT scan later that week and bloods where taken. I was told that the gb wall wasn't taken out at time of surgery as adhered to liver   surgeon said he would refer me for further surgery to have it removed.  CT results took a long time to come back  got a call regarding this a week past Wednesday.  Apparently as my gb had ruptured, I was not suitable for surgery, I would receive palliative chemo, however if that didn't work there would be nothing more they could do.  Surgeon said he would ask for a 2nd opinion and at the moment I haven't heard the outcome or had any appointment from ab oncologist.  I have however received a call from an oncology nurse, who has sent me a lot of literature regarding chemo.  My CT hasn't shown there are any mets and the cancer is still contained. I was advised that it was adenocarcinoma.  At the minute I'm still a bit in limbo.  I keep thinking they have made some sort of mistake as I feel well and look well..  I jyst can't get my head around it.

  • Keep string that's all we can do it is a very rare cancer mine is mestotis but only in my lymph nodes not organs I have had 8 rounds of chemo what shrank it but now on iummetheraphy had 5 rounds they don't know if it has grown or just a swelling I've had another scan waiting to see oncologist next wk but I feel so well half of my gallbladder was left in let me know how u go on x

  • Hi Deborah999, I am sorry to hear that your bowel was pierced.  I hope you get treatment soon.  I had a hernia for many years and my surgeon repaired it during the time of my  'routine' gallbladder surgery.  Can I ask, was you gb surgery carried out as a routine surgery,  or due to you having a cancerous gallbladder?  How did you find the chemo ?

  • Your gb sounds similar to mine, in that a part has been left behind.  Mine hasn't gone anywhere else yet, but I'm worried all this hanging around is delaying things and it may start to spread.  I was 6 months post op before they found out it was cancerous.

Hope all goes well  at your appointment next week  and you get further treatment soon. Take care, stay strong and I will you know how I gwt on.  X

  • Mine was carried out as a routine operation I waited 12months before they did it I had to go on a m8lk diet to shrink my liver for 2wks I lost 1 5 stone my 2 hr operation turned in to 7 my liver  functions properly after my operation they suspected cancer I had numerous test to say I had bile duct / gallbladder cancer terminal was the shock of my life turned my workd up side down I was only 63.5 now I have had 8 lots of chemo it shrank now ummetheraphy 5 lots to stop it growing but found it may be a swelling jot growth fund out Thursday x
