Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression

Just got this diagnosis today.  Been experiencing pain across lower back for the last 3 weeks, walking with sticks since end of January [hospital initially thought it was a hip replacement issue].

If radiotherapy is the answer, how quickly do I need it?

Any idea of typical waiting times?

  • Hi ErictheViking,  i am sorry to hear about your diagnosis.  I would of thought that the oncologist would have put a treatment plan in place for you.  I know that there are a range of treatments for MSCC.  I have metastatic breast cancer and I have cancer in pelvis, spine, ribs and skull.  I have a lot of back and hip pain.  I do not have the spinal compression yet but they have made me aware of the symptoms to look out for.  I do think they class this as an emergency so wouldnt image you have to wait long.  What are the next steps for you?  I wish you luck, please let me know how you get on.

  • Thanks for your kind reply.

Things have moved on quickly.  They're going to zap the 'mass' on the spine with 5 days of radiotherapy.  Just settling in to the ward.

Just seen radiotherapist.  They're starting today so hopefully will begin the process of healing.

Obviously this is very quick now they know what the issues are.

I've also got lesions within the pelvis, so that will need separate diagnosis and treatment, but at least we've got a start.

    Cheers and Best Wishes

  • Hi ErictheViking

Glad that they have got you in so quickly.  I really hope that the treatment works well for you.  Do you know where the primary cancer is and what treatment you will have for the lesions in your pelvis?  I wish you well and fingers crossed for a successful treatment.
