Newly diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and the Fear

Hi I was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer last month and I have had a laparoscopy and having an endoscopic ultrasound tomorrow. I wondered if anyone has any ideas how I can help the absolute overwhelming fear that I am experiencing. I am having really bad dreams and hardly sleeping. The smallest mention of cancer on TV sends me into a panic and I am so worried about upsetting my wife and 20 year old son. It seems to never leave my thoughts.

  • I remember that fear. I'd be ok and then it would hit me like a wave and it's very scary. Things felt better once I had a treatment plan.

I had chemo and then the Ivor Lewis. I was 63. I am still here nearly 12 years after my op.

Eating is not the same but life can still be enjoyable. Just take one day at a time, recovery isn't quick. I wish you luck and a long future

  • Hi. Its great to hear that you had all this going on 12 years ago and have come through it. I daren't look on Google about oesophagus cancer as when I did make that mistake when my son was diagnosed 6 weeks and 3 days ago it was all doom & gloom saying barely anyone makes it past 1 or 2 years. I think that might be if its stage 4 perhaps, don't know. Anyway I told my son about you and its lifted his spirits a lot so thanks for posting.
