Cancerous cervical polyp

Hi! I am 45 and just been diagnosed, I have had 18 months of irregular bleeding/spotting, a year of ultrasounds concentrating on my ovaries etc, went for my routine smear and they couldn’t do it due to a very large polyp in my cervix, I was assured that 98% of polyps are benign. I was referred within 2 weeks for removal. After being called back and told I was to see a consultant I knew it was bad news, he said they weren’t expecting what they found and it’s a rare sarcoma, he said names but I didn’t catch them as was in shock. I’ve had my ct scan, biopsy’s and an mri booked next week, pre op for a full hysterectomy is also next week. Things have moved so fast. Im feeling very scared to the point I can’t sleep or eat. Im so worried it has spread beyond my womb. Has anyone else had anything like this?

  • I pressed my GP as to why the wait was so long. She reassured me polyps aren't anything to worry about and she was sorry my symptoms were troubling me. The polyp is approx. 3.5cm and I still get a lot of discharge. My up-to-date swabs showed no infection present. I guess I need to be patient and hope to get an appointment in less than 6 months!

  • Thank you this is super helpful.

  • Thank you. Very helpful. I will see what they say.
have felt very ignored till now so hoping this question may sway them.

  • Fingers crossed for you. Good luck

  • Yes. Same here. 6.5 months away for my appt. I did the same as you too looking at the private cost and unless I sell my soul it’s just not possible.

  • Hi, wondering how you are now?

may I ask you about your symptoms please?

I have a polyp but been waiting 15 months to be seen…. All sorts of reasons, long wait for none urgent but discharged when I wanted to reschedule as the hospital wanted to see me when I was away. It’s been so stressful.

    here’s what has happened….

I am 46, nearly 47. Never had kids. I’m gay and never slept with a man. I have been with my partner years but had partners before her. Smears have been clear. Never had anything show on the last few I’ve had.

I delayed having a smear years though, (remiss of me) and went finally last year after getting spotting and discharge. The discharge was a bit bloody and lasted a day or so.

I went private and gynae said he could see a cervical polyp. This terrified me.

he did a trans USS and told me everything except the polyp was ok.

Smear taken, cytology (cells, like the old way they did it) and HPV testing.

smear came back clear. No HPV or bad cells.

Referred to have polyp removed. Was on waiting list months and meantime I went few months later (June) for another trans vaginal US as I was worried about the thickness of my womb from first vaginal scan. Gynae said time of month meant it was 10.1mm and that was ok but be prudent to check again just as period finished so I did and it was 7mm, 4 days after period but this time the Gynae (another one) found a small subserosal fibroid. Didn’t really comment more and said it all looked ok.

no polyps seen inside uterus and sent me off with a report as it was private.

nhs waiting list to have polyp removed went in and on waiting and meantime I felt ok, getting on with things until I got a letter 11 months after referral. I was going on holiday and couldn’t cancel so asked for a reschedule. Anyway they didn’t and I was waiting and went to my gp. Who then referred me and I’ve been waiting and this month things have gone downhill for me.

so my period cycle is 21-23 days and has shortened over the last few years. Anyway, I noted a week before my period I get spotting, usually isn’t much and then goes except this month, last period 10th September and yesterday started with brown bloody discharge. Today, light brown all day and thought it was going and then went loo, pinky blood. I’m not due till next week and I’m so worried it’s something bad. I’m scared it’s because the polyp is bad or fibroid and been left all this time.

so scared because I’d been having clear discharge for over a year, more than usual, doesn’t smell then this month, week before my period, spotting brown gunk, pink, doesn’t smell.  Just horrible every time I wipe

    feel so scared :(

Hi   I am doing good thank you, cancer was just in the polyp, I have regular scans and they keep a good eye on me.

my symptoms were constant bleeding to the point I never had a break, lots of smelly discharge too, my bleeding became very heavy and would be in my bed which was unusual for me.

if I never had that smear the polyp would still be in my cervix as it wasn’t seen on any scans. Also my polyp was quite big which was concerning, I think the GP knew it didn’t look right as I was referred on the 2 week cancer pathway.

It’s more than likely the polyp causing your discharge etc but that doesn’t mean it’s cancerous as they still do that even if it’s benign, I was just very unlucky.
