Stage 4 Renal & Lung Cancer

Hi All,

Today we found out my Nan, 69 has been diagnosed with stage 4 renal cancer which has spread to her lungs. The tumor is 10cm long and also growing into a vein. The surgeons are not able to operate at the minute as she is very frail and this is complex surgery.

I am distraught. I’ve been crying for hours. What do you say? How do I “put on a brave face” what do I say to my Mum?

Thanks.

  • Hello Rainbowladybird

I'm sorry to hear the news about your Nan's health. It's understandably a difficult time for you all and natural that you will have been struggling with what to say to your Nan and to your Mum.

Sometimes even though we may "put on a brave face" around our loved ones they can still read the hurt and emotions behind that mask. Be honest with your Mum about how you're feeling and hopefully, the two of you will be able to support each other through this difficult time and in turn that support for each other will enable you both to give your Nan all the love and support that she needs at this time.

If you think it may help to talk with someone outside of the family, you're welcome to call our team of nurses for some advice and support. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any information they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch Rainbowladybird if it helps to have a safe space to put don win writing how you're feeling, ask questions of chat with others who understand. We're here to listen and offer any support that we can.

Thinking of you all. Best wishes,
