Prostate cancer

Hi my dad has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. He has a lump in his neck which he had a biopsy on and it came back as prostate cancer. He has seen a consultant who said its advanced prostate cancer which has spread. He had a blood test but now has to wait for scans. The consultant said its not curable only manageable with hormone treatment. He is having back pain and very fatigue. My question is does he have to wait until he has scans to start treatment or can they start it before. Any advice would be welcome very scared.

  • Hi Starshine77 and a warm welcome to the forum though so sorry you have to be here and that your dad has cancer. I too have advanced prostate cancer APCa, in many places, and started hormone therapy HT the day i saw the consultant, like most with APCa do, but not everyone, your dad's cancer being found in his neck is a little unusual and the pain in his back needs investigating though I am not an expert, I would be asking your consultant or cancer nurse specialist why HT hasn't started. there may well be a reason, but at least you will have an answer, best wishes to you both, take care.

  • Thank you for your reply I will get him to phone Monday and ask the question.

  • Your welcome, you must be proactive, do your homework on dads diagnosis, ask every question you can think of and tell them you can be at hospital quickly if someone else cancels an appointment or scan, and if you feel wronged in any way tell them, be firm but polite, this will speed things up. take care.
