Bowel cancer that’s spread to lymph nodes

Hi, we’ve recently found out that mam has bowel cancer. She was all set for an operation to remove it and  part of the bowel, but they had concerns about a lesion on the spleen that had shown up so another scan was done. Following the scan the hospital said the spleen was fine but they discovered that the lymph nodes near the inferior vena cava were 3 x size and can’t operate on these because of their position. Another scan, this time a PET scan shows that the lymph nodes are also cancerous. This has all happened in the past month so it’s been a lot to take in and now the hospital have said it’s going to be chemo through the chest ( I don’t know what this means) every day for a week, then a week break and 3 months of chemo thereafter. You always think if it’s spread to the lymph nodes that’s it- the hospital haven’t given any prognosis but confirmed metastasis. I’m worried about my father and how he will cope with this too, they are in their mid-late 70s. That’s it really, I just needed somewhere to get it out of my head.

  • Hi moomilicious,

You've done the right thing in coming here and getting it all out of your head - this is what the forum is for really, allowing you to write things down and offload as well as reach out to others who understand what you are going through and who may have also looked after a loved one with a similar diagnosis. I hope that you will hear from others who have also been affected by bowel cancer in a similar way and that they will be along shortly to share their story with you.

I am so sorry to hear that they won't be able to operate due to the position of the lymph nodes and that the scan has confirmed spread to the lymph nodes. I hope that the chemotherapy treatment will be successful and there is information on our website on chemotherapy for colon cancer. Perhaps you could get in touch with our cancer nurses on this free number 0808 800 4040 if you want to find out more about the type of chemotherapy she is having? They will also be happy to answer questions you may have about this spread to lymph nodes. Their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. It is a lot to take in and I hope that you are given more information soon about what it all means.

Hopefully others who have been given a similar diagnosis or who have looked after a loved one with bowel cancer who also had spread to lymph nodes will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

Best wishes to you and your mum,
