Oncologist appointment tomorrow - what questions should I ask?

After being diagnosed on 18th January and going through all the various test, I finally get to see the oncologist tomorrow. Would like to hear from anyone who has any suggestions about what questions would be good to ask.

Also what are your experiences of how long it took for treatment to start after first oncology appointment. As my breast cancer is grade 3 and fast growing, I'm worried about it spreading, before my treatment even gets started.

Was it suggested you have a PICC line or port?

  • Hi maybe recording the conversation on your phone might help then when you go home and are more relaxed you can listen to the conversation a few times to fully understand it. I’m sure if you ask about the timespan on when different bits of the treatment will start they could give you an idea. When I had treatment many yrs ago I asked them to be very honest with me , im sure trying to have a positive attitude helps( just my opinion)   I wish you every good  be luck tomorrow.

  • Hi Lady1966, thank you for your reply. This post is over a year old and thankfully I'm now in remission. You recently saw this post as some of us ladies on this thread still chat at times. Hope you are still keeping well. Xx

  • Hello Pippin24,

Yeah I noticed your post is a year old. Just like my post as  joined here after I undergone lumpectomy 4 years ago. Our post still get a reply because some “passenger in the boat we’re in” can see our post and reply.

Hope you’re coping well with your treatment and slowly back in good shape?

    Best regards,

    Inday-Tintin

  • Hi Inday-Tintin, I love that this thread is still going. When it started  there were a few of us going through treatment at the same time. It really helps if you can share experiences. We still catch up from time to time, to see how we're all doing. I'm in remission now, but still on various treatments for a while. I feel really good at the moment, hope you are doing well too. Xx

  • Thank you for the reply Pippin24, so glad to hear you are doing good.

Yep I’m doing well  since I had lumpectomy 4 years ago I don’t have any issues related to my breast cancer.. All is well and waiting for my fifth mammogram later this year. After that if I’m cleared my oncologist will decide what to do next.

One of our church member has been diagnosed with primary breast cancer in 1998. She had lumpectomy but no chemo, only a couple of treatment of radiotherapy (like me) and 5 years of taking Tamoxifen. She is a cancer survivor and now at late 70’s she is generally healthy.

That give me hope to carry on as a cancer patient. Plus the fact that NHS service is fantastic. I get immediate attention and scheduled an operation then radiotherapy treatment.

Always take care of yourself and sending you best wishes. Xx

  • Good to hear you have kept well over the last 4 years. Due to my cancer having a high recurrence rate, I'm currently on phesgo injections to help reduce this. I'm also on letrozole for 5 years and zoledronic for 3 years. I'm happy to take whatever will help keep me from having a recurrence. I have young grandchildren who I adore, so want to be around to watch them grow up. Good to hear that you and the lady from your church have done so well. I really hope for the same result. Thank you for sharing your journey, take care. Xx
