Oncologist appointment tomorrow - what questions should I ask?

After being diagnosed on 18th January and going through all the various test, I finally get to see the oncologist tomorrow. Would like to hear from anyone who has any suggestions about what questions would be good to ask.

Also what are your experiences of how long it took for treatment to start after first oncology appointment. As my breast cancer is grade 3 and fast growing, I'm worried about it spreading, before my treatment even gets started.

Was it suggested you have a PICC line or port?

  • Hi Pippin,

They said that it could take a while. Having said that, I have an appointment to see the consultant again in November, to discuss the results of the tilt test, so it's a case of wait and see.

  • Good Morning Jolamine, that's a good sign that you have a consultant appointment booked in for November, they must be expecting to fit it in by then. You could always phone the department that does the test, explain you have appointment to discuss the results. Sometimes one department doesn't know what the other is doing. It might speed things up a bit. I did this when I was waiting for an echocardiogram, which I needed to have done before my surgery and I was also due to go away. They were really helpful and fitted me in within a few days. Would be worth a try. I'm off to the hospital this afternoon to get my wound checked. There is just one section now, an inch long on my tummy that won't heal. I've been on antibiotics for a week, but it's still a bit gungy, so I'm not sure what they'll do now. I am a bit worried about it. Not sure when I'll get an appointment to discuss results of pathology, but there us an mdt meeting tomorrow. I would like to know when my phesgo injections can start again. Hope you have a lovely day. Xx

  • Hi Pippin,

The secretaries were very helpful at fitting me in, when I had genuine emergencies. There are more urgent cases than mine, so I don't like to bother staff about this. I expect that I should hear soon.

How did you get on this afternoon? I hope that they have found a better dressing for the wound on your tummy. You must be anxious to get your pathology results. I hope that you hear something after tomorrow's MDT meeting.

We spent this morning at Audiology, getting a new hearing aid fitted for my hubby. Thankfully, it seems to be a big improvement on the old one.

  • Hi Jolamine, I really hope you get your appointment through, before going to see your consultant. I'm much more reassured after my hospital appointment. They have redressed it with an iodine dressing to help the healing . The yellow I was concerned about is where the scab is trying to form, but is taking time as wound is still a bit wet. Apparently it is not infected, which is a big relief. Good to hear that your husband's new hearing aid is an improvement on the previous one, he must be really pleased. Xx

  • Hi Pippin,

I'm delighted to hear that there is no infection in your wound now. These iodine dressings are pretty good at healing - I used these when I scalded my tummy badly back in May. I had the same regime - antibiotics then the iodine dressings. I'm still left with a lot of scarring, but at least it's healed.

My hubby is pleased that he can hear more, but I'm delighted, as I hope that I won't have to keep repeating things to him now.

    Will do.

  • Hi everyone, just thought I'd give you an update, as I had my post op assessment today. It was the best possible news I could have had. They took 20 lymph nodes out, none of which had cancer showing. There was no sign of either tumour and no cancer cells in any of the breast tissue. They still want me to have radiotherapy as a precautionary measure and to reduce the risk of cancer coming back. Hope you are all OK. Xx

  • Hi    That's amazing news!  Well done you!  Radiotherapy will be a breeze after everything you've been through.  Do you know how many sessions you will need?

All good here thanks.  Had a poorly pup for a couple of days but she seems to be much better today.  My last immunotherapy session is scheduled for 21 November - all being well (e.g. bloods are ok and they can find a vein for treatment!) I will be ringing that bell!

I'm meeting up with the "Moving Forward" ladies on Monday evening for dinner and a catch-up.  I'm looking forward to that.  Am also out to dinner tonight lol. Thank goodness for my PT to help me work it all off!  He's gradually increasing what I do and I am definitely feeling better for it.  Yesterday he introduced light weights and I found out I couldn't quite straighten my left arm directly in front of me!  That was a new one lol.  So I'm working on that in between sessions too.

    Hope everyone is doing well.

  • Hi Carol, I can't believe how good the news was, still feels a bit surreal really. I'm actually quite pleased they've said that I should have radiotherapy, as it reduces the risk of recurrence. Sorry to hear about your poorly pup, good that he's feeling a bit better today. Lovely that you're getting out and about and socialising and doing normal things again. Sound like you are doing really well with the exercise you're doing with your PT, keep up the good work. I'm doing my daily exercises and feel my mobility is pretty good. Just have a small part of my tummy wound that hasn't healed yet, it's only about an inch long. I was looking at the moving forward courses online yesterday, do I have t get through the radiotherapy before I can go on one? Hope you have a lovely weekend and I hope the pup continues to improve.
